Growing up on the farm he worked with his dad's plumbing and drainage business in the summertime. He graduated from West Central High School in Maynard, Iowa, with the class of 1961. On May 24, 1964, he married Linda Meyerhoff at St John's Lutheran Church Bennington, Waterloo, Iowa. Joel worked for Engineered Equipment in Waterloo, and then on to John Deere in Waterloo for 18 years, while contract farming and raising 4 children. Then he started working for Cedar Metal Works in Waterloo until they closed, then Tyson in Independence. Later he retired from Nestle's in Waverly as a maintenance mechanic and operator on April 30, 2012.
Joel's on-the-job training included welding, learning MIG, TIG, spray, stick, and oxygen acetylene methods. His mechanical skills included hydraulic, air logic, electrical, heating, plumbing, cooling, and a working knowledge of tool and die for good trouble shooting skills.
