June 16, 1924 - May 2, 2025

Myrtle Burger Eyestone,100, of Waterloo, died Friday, May 2, 2025. She was born June 16, 1924, in Rural Mahaska County, Iowa, daughter of Lloyd (Chick) Jarard and Mary Wymore Jarard.

Myrtle's mother passed away when Myrtle was 3 years old. She was raised by her maternal Aunt and Uncle, Gladys & Hovey Musser. The family moved to Waterloo in 1937. Myrtle graduated from East High School in 1941. After graduation she worked as a seamstress at Powers Manufacturing during World War II. Myrtle was united in marriage to Paul Burger on April 17, 1944. Paul was in the US Navy Air Corps and the couple lived in several locations. At the end of World War II, the couple settled in Paul's hometown of Dysart, Iowa. To their union three children were born: David, Kathy and Larry.

In 1952 the young family moved back to Waterloo due to Paul's failing health. Paul died of cancer (glioblastoma) in November 1954. During the 1950's and early 1960's Myrtle worked for Walnut Dairy. In 1962 she returned to Powers Manufacturing, retiring in 1985.

In April 1972 Myrtle was united in marriage to Forest Eyestone. The couple enjoyed over 30 years of travel, camping, fishing and many beautiful gardens and flowers. He preceded her in death in January 2003.

Due to a fall in her home in April 2023, Northcrest Care Center became Myrtle's home. She has been lovingly cared for by her 'Angels' since arriving. She has enjoyed being a celebrity, Ms. Myrtle, the oldest resident. A very special thanks to Ms. Thelma Wright, her friend and roommate.

Myrtle is preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd & Mary Jarard, foster parents, Hovey & Gladys Musser, spouses Paul L. Burger and Forest Eyestone, sisters Lucile Jarard (Cecil) Frick and Virginia Jarard (Larry) Ragan, cousins/sisters Lois Musser (Sid) Yahnke Leone Musser (Robert) Jones, stepdaughter Sherry Eyestone (John) Pilkington, step daughter-in-law Patricia Eyestone, granddaughter Lora Pilkington Carter.

Myrtle is survived by her children David F. (Sandra) Burger, Kathy Burger (Peter) Scaturro, Larry P. (Deb) Burger, Josephine Eyestone (Ron) Fullwood and Rex Eyestone. She is survived by her grandchildren Dionne, Jennifer and Joseph Scaturro, Paul (Jenn) Burger, Maggie Burger, Emily Burger (Jason) Dougherty, Mark (Kimi) Graham, Cisco (Denise) Smith, Danny (Shanna) Smith, Bryan (Jenifer) Pilkington, Mike (Zinaida) Eyestone, Mickey Eyestone (Brian) Haack, Mindy Eyestone (Joshua) Bender, Dee Anne (Jeremy) Burns, Tamara South, Brian (Hazel) Fullwood, Alicia Fullwood (Wayne) Gent. She is also survived by 28 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.

Myrtle especially enjoyed her many nieces and nephews and their families!! Myrtle will be remembered for the beautiful clothes that she created and her delicious pies, noodles and her famous "baked steak" and "sticky chicken".

Funeral services will take place Friday, May 9, at 11:00 AM at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave, with visitation one hour prior at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Bend Humane Society, or Cedar Valley Hospice in her honor.
