Richard ("Dick") Kennel Berky died peacefully at the age of 99 in Cedar Falls, Iowa where he has been a resident for more than 65 years. He was born in Bluffton, Ohio to Olga Kennel Berky and Professor Herbert Weller (HW) Berky.
Dick was a combat veteran of WWII, and held a Master's degree in mathematics and engineering from Michigan State. He worked in engineering design for multiple farm implement companies over the years, including John Deere, bringing him, his wife Agnes and their growing family to Cedar Falls. Dick did private engineering consulting for years, as well as living in both Vienna, Austria and Jakarta, Indonesia working with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and in Alexandria, Egypt with the U.S. Agency for International Development. Dick retired to his acreage in rural Cedar Falls and spent the last 10 years of life in the Western Home Communities.
Dick lived a long, well-travelled and adventurous life. He was a loving father and husband and a devout Christian, always remembered for his kindness and willingness to help others.
Dick is survived by his spouse of over 75 years, Agnes (Suter) Berky, of Cedar Falls, his four daughters Ellen Berky, Lynette Voelker, Leslie Ashcraft, Karen Berky and son Garth Berky. Dick had nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family is thankful to Dick's caregivers during hospice for their attentive care and professional dedication. To all who remember Dick fondly, a gift in honor of his life's work can be made to the Mennonite Central Committee, Habitat for Humanity or Western Home Communities.
