WATERLOO - Richard D. Gebhardt, 92, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at Pinnacle Specialty Care in Cedar Falls.
He was born Dec. 29, 1931, in Clay Center, KS, son of Emil and Goldie (Bidwell) Gebhardt. He graduated from Cabool High School (MO) in 1950.
Richard served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
He married Shirley A. Rewerts on May 26, 1956, in Clarksville; she preceded him in death September 16, 2012.
Richard was a machinist at John Deere for 29 years. After his retirement from John Deere, he worked as a bartender at the dog track in Waterloo.
He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church and UAW Local 838. He and Shirley enjoyed golfing together for many years and wintering at Lake Havasu, AZ. They also enjoyed waterskiing and fishing. Above all, Richard loved his family and friends.
Richard is survived by two brothers, Leonard (Peggy) Gebhardt of Cedar Falls, and Kenny Gebhardt of Great Falls, MT; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; a son, Richard Ray Gebhardt; a brother, Ernie Gebhardt; and two sisters, Dorothy Cheney, and Helen Darter.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 15, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Waterloo. Burial to follow at Waterloo Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted. Visitation from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo.
Memorials may be directed to Care Initiatives Hospice.
