WATERLOO - Ronald E. Bengston, 74, of Waterloo, died Friday, August 2, 2024 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

He was born October 14, 1949 in Waterloo, the son of George W. Jr. and Beverly A. Close Bengston. He married Linda Youngblut on Jan. 9, 1971 in Jesup, Iowa. Ron graduated from Orange High School in 1968. He joined the U.S. Navy and honorably served our country during the Vietnam War, and then with the Waterloo U.S.

Navy Reserve Center until 1994.

He was employed as a printing press operator with Controlofax, retiring in 1998. He then worked as a groundskeeper at UNI, retiring in 2010. Ron was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Amvets, V.F.W. and the American Legion. He was a Scout Leader for Troop 116, Winnebago Council for 25 years.

He is survived by his wife; three children: Karl (Michelle) Bengston of Waterloo, Amy (Mike) Van Donsel of Appleton, WI, and Christopher Bengston of Kansas City, MO; five grandchildren: Alyssa Phelps, Brynn (Mike) Kruger, Brady Bengston, Linden Van Donsel and Mason Van Donsel; a brother, William (Cindy) Bengston of Waterloo and a sister, Karen (Robert) Demuth of Gilbertville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gerald; and two nephews: Michael Bengston and Nicholas Schares.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 7 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The Iowa Patriot Guard Riders will escort the family to the cemetery where full military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and the American Legion Becker Chapman Post 138 and VFW Post 1623.

Public visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 pm rosary and a 6:30 pm vigil service. Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, Blessed Sacrament Church, The Parkinson Foundation or American Cancer Society.The Mass will be livestreamed at https://www.blessedsacramentwaterloo.org/blesac-live.

Worked with Ron at UNI in the grounds shop. He was also ready to help anyone if you asked. I liked working with in our area and he showed me alot in taking care of the equipment. I have to say sometimes not too patient playing cards even worst when we lost. I'm sure he will be missed by all!
