Mrs. Dorothy Tijo Heisler Shirley, a resident of Opelika, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2025, at the age of 88.
Tijo was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her children, Brenda Wright (Gary), Timothy Shirley (Jeanne), John Shirley (Rhonda) and Angela Tijo Shirley; grandchildren, Jonathan (Corrina), Stacey (Ben), Lauren (Dustin), Brandon (Jessie), Mallori (Travis), Dav (Reagan), Stephen (Claudia), Sarah Tijo (Bailey) and Grace; great grandchildren, Lexie, Cole, Nathan, Austin, Riley-Claire, Easton, Lily-Beth, Knox, Lane, Heisler, Pablo, Olivia, Melody Tijo and Baby Boy Shirley who will arrive in June; great-great grandson, Beckham; nieces, nephews and adopted family who will miss her dearly.
Mrs. Shirley is preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-six years, Reverend John David Shirley; father, Roy Heisler; mother, Daughtry Heisler; sisters, Linda Gail Heisler and Sandra Goss and her brother, Neil Heisler.
Her educational journey began at Tallassee High School, and she later graduated from Jackson High School in Jackson, South Carolina. This foundation of education set the stage for a remarkable career, during which she held notable positions at the Bank of Tallassee and Alfa Insurance. Throughout her time in these roles, Mrs. Shirley was known not only for her professional expertise but also for her unwavering commitment to serving the community.
Tijo’s love for her family was the cornerstone of her life and as the wife of a pastor, she embraced her vocation with grace, finding fulfillment not only in her family life but also in her contributions to her church community. She dedicated herself to the service of others, providing encouragement and support to those around her. Her faith was a guiding light, influencing the lives of countless individuals who were fortunate enough to cross her path.
Mrs. Shirley leaves behind a rich tapestry of love and memories that will continue to inspire those who had the privilege to know her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church, Tallassee, Monday, May 19, 2025, from 3:00PM until service time at 4:00PM. Rev. Steve Scarborough and Dr. Trey Waldrop officiating. Burial will follow at Refuge Baptist Cemetery, Jeffcoat Funeral Home directing.
