Harvey Strand Obituary

Harvey Allen Strand

September 2, 1930 – April 5, 2024

Leavenworth, WA

Harvey Allen Strand went to be with the Lord on April 5, 2024. He was born September 2, 1930, on the family farm in Selby, SD, to Harold Sigurd Strand and Lena Mertz. His grandparents were Norwegian immigrants, and his mother was of Ukrainian and German descent. Early years on the farm, with his brother, Dean, were ideal until the Great Depression and crop failures forced the family to move west in 1936, eventually settling in Idaho Falls, ID.

Upon graduation from Idaho Falls High School, Harvey furthered his education at Idaho State College, where he met the love of his life, Shirley Driskell. They married following graduation in 1953, and moved to Seattle, WA, where he attended the University of Washington School of Dentistry, graduating in 1957. Next was a move to Merced, CA, where he served for 3 years in the Air Force Dental Corps. Returning to Seattle, he practiced dentistry and taught at the UW School of Dentistry and Shoreline C.C. Dental Hygiene Program. He served on multiple committees and boards at the local, state, and national levels.

Harvey was a dedicated husband, father, and friend. Road trips to visit extended relatives, camping, hiking, and ski trips were all highlights of his life. Harvey and Shirley were generous hosts and graciously opened their home to others, including a refugee family beginning a new life in the USA. Their home in Leavenworth, WA, was a retreat for many, hosting lovely dinners and overnight guests. Harvey was always eager to support and inquire about everyone's latest endeavors. He was a kind and generous gentleman.

His heart for others extended into the community through his dedication and service as a Shoreline School District Board member, Habitat for Humanity laborer, Cascade Medical grant writer, and planner for Mountain Meadows.

A deep faith in the Lord led him to serve as an elder in the Presbyterian Church. He and Shirley cherished their time with their Upper Valley group from Cashmere Presbyterian Church, and their years of fellowship within the Leavenworth Methodist Church.

Harvey loved music! He attended the Seattle Symphony, was in the church choir, and, in retirement, sang with the Leavenworth Village Voices.

He is survived by his children: Sandra (James) Thomas, Karen Strand, and Roger (Anne) Strand; blessed with four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Lisa Bennett and Stephanie Reed; and predeceased by wife, Shirley; and brother, Dean.

Special thanks to Mountain Meadows, Cascade Medical Center, and Hospice of Chelan County.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Leavenworth Community United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Donations in his name may be made to the Cascade Medical Foundation, 817 Commercial St., Leavenworth, WA, 98826.
