Rev. Thomas M. Osgood died October 14 from complications of Covid and Alzheimer's dementia at age 93. Thomas was born on February 2, 1932, to Dr. Thomas H. Osgood and Dorothy Ewert (Marston) Osgood. Thomas attended Milton Academy and obtained his bachelor's degree from Yale University. He married Judith Hubbard in 1954 and the first of their sons, Tom, was born in 1956. Thomas received his Doctor of Divinity from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, CA in 1957. Rev. Thomas ministered in the Episcopal church for more than 40 years.
Rev. Osgood first served as priest at St. George's Church of the Arctic in Kotzebue, Alaska (1957-1961). During these years, sons Peter (1958) and Stephen (1960) joined the family. While at St. George's he raised funds and initiated the construction of a community hall that is still in use. He was well respected by the local Inuit and was honored with an invitation to go on a whale hunt. He declined this invitation because he thought his 6'4" frame would be in the way of others in the small, wooden framed walrus skinned boat. He did accept the invitation to go on a seal hunt during the spring ice breakup on Kotzebue Sound and his photos of this trip were stunning.
Rev. Osgood ministered at St. Stephen's Church in Longview, WA (1961-1963), St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Sequim, WA (1963-1969), and Epiphany Church in Seattle (1969-1974). Thomas felt a calling to minister to the sick and aged so between 1974 and 1978 he worked as a chaplain serving at local hospitals and a large retirement home in Seattle. Following divorce in 1978 he moved to California where he ministered as chaplain for 23 years in two large retirement communities, The Meadows in Los Gatos, and St. Paul's Towers in Oakland. In 1991, he married Margaret (Marley) Pring Paczkowski. He retired in 2001. Later in retirement he and Marley moved from San Mateo, CA to Klamath Falls, OR and then to Charlotte, NC. Following Marley's death in 2015 Thomas moved back to Washington, living in Anacortes and then Wenatchee.
Rev. Osgood is survived by his sons, Dr. Thomas Osgood (Kathy Moody), Wenatchee, Peter Osgood (Nancy Treser Osgood), Claremont, CA, Stephen Osgood (Andra Nicoli), Davis, CA; Marley's three children, Eleanor, William and Christopher; six grandchildren; niece Dr. Helen Russell (Dr. John Firth), England, and nephew John Russell (Mandy), England. Rev. Osgood is also survived by his first wife, Judy Hutchinson, Wenatchee. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marley; his parents; his sister, Elizabeth Russell and niece, Carol Russell.
Thomas will be remembered for his care for others, which was well suited for his chosen profession. He loved spending time with family and was an accomplished pianist occasionally playing the organ during worship services when an organist was not available. He enjoyed sailing and exploring the NW, and lead many family camping vacations in the great Northwest and British Columbia.
Family will gather for a celebration of life in Seattle in April. A memorial service for Rev. Thomas M. Osgood will be held May 23, 2026 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Charlotte, NC where he will be interred with his beloved Marley.
