Joan Berger Karl
On July 23, 2021, Joan Berger Karl (formerly Joan Glimcher), 90, passed away peacefully in Aldie, Virginia. A long-time resident of Alexandria, VA, Joan was born in 1931 in New York City. She grew up in Long Branch, NJ during the Depression. After graduating from Smith College in Northampton, MA, she worked as a writer in several different industries throughout her career. Joan married Sumner Glimcher of Chelsea, MA in 1955 in Munich, Germany, and they lived and traveled overseas, eventually settling in Westport, CT, where they raised their family. She married her beloved second husband, David J. Karl of Washington, DC, in 2003. Joan greatly enjoyed reading, travel, and lively conversation. She was deeply interested in environmental protection, women's rights, animal welfare, social justice, and politics. She loved the arts: museums, opera, ballet, and theater. Most of all, she treasured being in the company of family and friends. Joan is survived by four loving daughters, as well as two beloved granddaughters. She was a grand lady, as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside, whose smile could light up a room. Her strength and determination were evident in her deep commitment to her family throughout her long life, and she leaves behind an amazing legacy of love, joy, and resilience. She will be greatly missed but will live forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Monmouth County SPCA (https://monmouthcountyspca.org
