David Sawyer Obituary
David Sawyer, age 55, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, September 29th. David was born on May 13th, 1970, to Rev. William "Bill" and Jean Sawyer in Kendallville. David lived his entire life in Lagrange County, and since he never met a stranger, he was on a first name base with at least half of the county. David may not have been able to tell you what he ate for breakfast yesterday morning, but he could tell you the name of a person he used bag and carry groceries for back when he worked at Purity as a teen and young adult. David was a people person thru and thru, and once you were his friend, you had a friend for life.
To know David was to love him, he was full of joy and contentment in life that most of us can't begin to imagine. David rarely complained, unless of course you put cheese on his hamburger, which was something he simply would not stand for. This was one of many of the quirks that David was known, teased and loved for. He loved to joke around, and it was easy to get him going!
David was a very special person, it was never easy to put a finger or label on what made him "unique", but it was obvious that he wasn't typical. While it may have been obvious to everyone else, it never seemed that David was aware or gave much thought to his uniqueness. David was able to live his life fully in his own special way, spreading love and cheer to anyone privileged enough to be in his presence. During his time on Earth, David had a light that could not be dimmed despite the obstacles that he faced. He always lived in the present moment, fueled by peanut butter sandwiches or chicken nuggets, cold Pepsi, and a bag of peanut M&M's.
During the last several years of his life David was a resident of The Waters in LaGrange, and he enjoyed so much the time that he resided there. Once again, David found the good in his situation by befriending and bringing joy to his fellow residents and to the staff that provided such great care for him. David made one of the best friends of his life while living at The Waters with his friend Cathy. David finding a friend like Cathy to spend his time with playing board games and old school Nintendo, coloring, and doing puzzles with was like hitting the jackpot! Once again, he showed all of us that there is joy to be found as long as you are always looking and open to enjoying life right where you are.
David spent his whole life as a devout Christian and he loved the community that he had in his brothers and sisters in Christ. Of all the things that David would want to be remembered for it was how he found joy and happiness in every day of his life, and he would want that for all his friends and family as well. May we all be able to live as his example and keep our hearts and eyes open for the big and small moments in life where joy is found.
