Elsbeth D. "Beth" Cass

Elsbeth "Beth" (Derby) Cass, 80, of Leo-Cedarville, passed away on Monday, July 21, 2025, at home with her family by her side. Beth was the wife of Fred Cass. Born in Deerfield, Illinois, on September 9, 1944, she was the daughter of the late John and Shirley (Clark) Derby. After graduating from Highland Park High School, she attended Hanover College and Indiana University, earning BS and MS degrees in Spanish and English Teaching. She and Fred met at a Spanish language camp for high school students in southern Indiana in the summer of 1967 after Fred returned from Peace Corps service in Venezuela. They were married on June 15, 1968, and enjoyed 57 years of marriage. Beth taught a total of 23 years-3 years at Leo High School and 20 years at Carroll High School teaching Spanish. An active member of New Haven United Methodist Church, Beth served as a leader of several women's church groups from Bible studies to women's circles, bake and rummage sales, and church office volunteering. She will be greatly missed by the church's United Women of Faith. A wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, her life was molded in three Fs: family, faith, and friendships. She was an excellent role model for everyone. Beth is survived by her husband, Fred; daughters, Meg (Joe) Worman of Leo-Cedarville and Christy (Ian) Walker of Indianapolis; son, Brian (Charity) Cass of Fort Wayne; sisters, Jean (Gene) Patterson and Susan (Tom) Haight; and grandsons, Blake, Drew, Rowan, Ryker, and Regin. Funeral service is 12 pm Saturday, July 26, 2025, at New Haven United Methodist Church, 630 Lincoln Hwy E, New Haven with visitation one hour prior. Visitation is also 1 to 4 and 5 to 7 pm Friday, July 25, 2025, at the church. Private burial in I. O. O. F. Cemetery in New Haven.
