Terry Tucker Obituary
Terry Lee Tucker, 79, of Huntertown, passed away on Tuesday, October 13, at the Auburn Village Nursing Home.
Terry was born at Garrett Hospital on January 1, 1946, to Howard and Rita Mae (Leach) Tucker. As a baby, he lived on the family farm in Huntertown. The family later moved to the Wallen Road area, and he attended Washington Center School. He became a junior fireman at the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department at the age of 12.
In 1962, the family moved back to Huntertown, and Terry graduated from Huntertown High School in 1964. He became a member of the Huntertown Volunteer Fire Department during high school and made fire runs for the department during school.
In February 1966, Terry was drafted into the US Army, where he was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, in the Second Armored Division, and at Fort Knox, Kentucky, at the US Army Armor School. He was discharged from the Army in February 1968 as an E5 (sergeant). After the Army, he returned to Huntertown and worked in the family fuel oil business with his father, Howard.
In October 1968, he married Lois Sarrazin, and they lived in the Wallen Road area for two years. Terry was a fire officer and training officer at Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department. In 1971, they moved back to the Huntertown area, and Terry became the training officer for the Huntertown Volunteer Fire Department.
Terry was a founding member of the Allen County Fire Arson and Specialized Team (FAST). He retired from the Huntertown Volunteer Fire Department and FAST in the early 1990s. He worked with his father at Tucker Oil and bought the business from him when Howard retired in 1985. He sold Tucker Oil in 1990 and worked for 5 years for Irving Gravel. He became a partner/owner and general manager of Cornerstone Trucking in 1995 before retiring in 2010. Terry had also worked for Town & Country Meat Packing in the 1960s. After retiring, Terry worked as a tree farmer on the family property and enjoyed being outdoors.
All three of his children and five of his seven grandchildren have or will graduate from Carroll High School. Four generations of Tuckers attended Northwest Allen County Schools. Terry's son, Rob, became a fourth-generation volunteer fireman at Huntertown Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Lois; son, Robert (Erin) Tucker; two daughters, Christine (Mark) Pomeroy and Suzanne (Anthony) Baumgartner; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Sharon "Sharry" Tucker.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Calling for Terry will take place on Sunday, October 26, at Sheets and Childs Funeral Home, Huntertown Chapel, beginning at 12:00 pm. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 pm at the funeral home.
No burial is planned at this time.
