Alfred Brown Obituary

Alfred Rowe Brown, 85, of Stewartsville, NJ, formerly of East Orange, passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones, at St. Luke's Hospital-Anderson Campus. Al was born in East Orange, NJ on July 8, 1940 to the late Joseph Meeker Brown and Emily Roberts Brown. Al was a graduate of East Orange High School, received his Bachelor Degree from Montclair State and received a Master's Degree in Natural History and a Master's Degree in Education from William Paterson. For 42 years, Al was a Biology Teacher and, later in his career, Head of the Science Department at Passaic High School. He loved life, enjoyed serving his community and his church. For many years, he was a member of Glen Ridge Congregational Church where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and played handbells. Most recently, Al was a member of Old Greenwich Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and sang in the choir. Over the years, he would volunteer with various organizations in the East Orange area and would lend his cooking skills. Al is known for his world famous mac-n-cheese and coleslaw, which he graciously made for anyone who asked. In his free-time he enjoyed gardening, reading, and tinkering with broken objects. Al's happy place was the house on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, where he would relax, unwind with family and friends and enjoy hearing the calls of the loons. Alfred is survived by his Wife of 62 years, Lorraine Malson Brown; Son, David A.; Daughter-in-law Christine Brown; Grandchildren, Emily V. Kelly and her husband Joseph D. Kelly IV, Liam J. Brown, Carolyn E. Brown, and Ryan T. Brown. Alfred was predeceased by Son, Jeffrey A. Brown and Brother, Joseph M. Brown, Jr. A Visitation for the Family and Friends of Alfred will be held from 2:00 pm to 4:00pm and from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday, September 25, 2025 at Rupell Funeral Home, LLC; 465 Memorial Parkway; Phillipsburg, NJ 08865. A Funeral Service to Celebrate Alfred's life will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025 at 2:00pm at Old Greenwich Presbyterian Church; 17 Greenwich Church Road; Stewartsville, NJ 08886. A Private Interment will be held in Rosedale Cemetery; Montclair, NJ. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation be made to Old Greenwich Presbyterian Church (ogpc.org), Loon Preservation Committee (https://loon.org) or a charity of your choice.
