Arthur Schmell Obituary
Arthur "Art" M. Schmell, 90, of Quakertown, PA; formerly of Silverdale, PA went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 20, 2025 at his residence. Art was the loving husband of Shirley A. (Ott) Schmell for 67 years. He was born in Silverdale, PA to the late Walter W. Schmell and the late Martha G. (Musselman) Schmell. Art graduated from Hilltown High School, class of 1952. Throughout his working lifetime, he was a self-employed farmer in Hilltown Twp. for 65 years. He served in I-W service as a purchasing agent for MCC in Akron, PA. He briefly worked as a long haul trucker for Hatfield Packing. He then worked as a self-employed local backhoe operator. Art obtained his realtor license and worked part-time for Yerger & Wismer Realty in Perkasie, PA. He drove school bus for the Pennridge School District for many years. He also owned several apartments and owned and operated the former Harf's Beauty Supply in Hilltown, PA. Art was a member of Deep Run Mennonite Church West where he served as a Sunday school superintendent, drove the church bus, sang in the church choir, and cooked for the church breakfast events. He was a treasurer for the Crossroads Community Center in Philadelphia. He was a volunteer firefighter and former treasurer for the Silverdale Fire Company for over 60 years. Art enjoyed welding, bowling, watching baseball, music, and playing the Marimba. For many years, he and his wife opened their home to many people in need. He cared and loved his many farm animals over the years. Art was a hardworking, caring, generous man who was always willing to help others. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four sons, Barry L. Schmell of Fort Wayne, IN, David A. Schmell & wife, Melissa of Quakertown, PA, Preston R. Schmell of Fresno, CA, Rodger K. Schmell & wife, Diana of Perkasie, PA; his 10 grandchildren – Rebekah & Simeon Paulson, Jordan & Heather Schmell, Jacob & Lauren Schmell, Ellen Schmell, LenLen Schmell, Tanya & Ben Wambold, Derek & Brittany Schmell, Timothy Schmell, Caleb & Brandy Schmell, Kylee & Anthony King; and his 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Art was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Deborah L. Schmell; his grandson, Joshua Schmell; and his sister, Marian M. Pfautz. A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2025 from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at Deep Run Mennonite Church West, 1008 Deep Run Road, Perkasie, PA 18944, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am. Inurnment will take place at Deep Run West Mennonite Cemetery.
