Carol Gonzalez Obituary

Carol Ann Gonzalez, a vibrant spirit whose love of dance, justice, and community touched countless lives, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025, at the age of 75. She now joins her beloved daughter, Shona Charisse Bailey, in eternal rest. Born on January 17, 1950, in New York City to the late Milton and Ethel V. (Crawford) Gonzalez, Carol was raised in the heart of Harlem. From a young age, she was known for her warmth, her sharp wit, and her magnetic presence-qualities that would define her lifelong impact on those around her. Carol was a proud graduate of Roosevelt High School (Class of 1968) and a lifelong learner who later earned her BA in Liberal Arts with honors from the College of New Rochelle. Dance was the rhythm of Carol's soul. She began her journey at Ruth Williams Dance Studio in Harlem and continued her training at the La Rocque Bey School of Dance, Olatunji Center for African Culture, and the Pied Piper School of Dance. She mastered tap, ballet, jazz, African, and Calypso, gracing stages across New York City-including the prestigious Carnegie and Philharmonic Halls. Carol was also a dazzling Latin dancer, often seen lighting up the floor at the famed Palladium. Carol's passion extended far beyond the stage. At just 13 years old, she joined the historic 1963 March on Washington, sparking a lifelong devotion to activism. Whether fighting for civil rights, justice for victims of violence, or equitable elder care, Carol brought unshakable courage and compassion to every cause she embraced. In 1970, Carol welcomed her greatest joy-her daughter, Shona. Their bond was unbreakable, and Shona remained the light of Carol's life until her tragic passing in 1991. Following this heartbreak, Carol channeled her grief into purpose, becoming a powerful voice for victims' families through Families of Victims Against Violence, led by Reverend Dr. Herbert Daughtry. Carol's career was as diverse and impactful as her interests. She held key roles in the NYC Mayor's Office under Mayor Ed Koch, IBM, St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital, Ethicon (a Johnson & Johnson company), and Sanofi Aventis. Even in retirement, she continued her political work with Pennsylvania Representative Peter Schweyer, while dedicating herself more deeply to advocacy, particularly in racial justice, voting rights, and senior care. Her efforts did not go unnoticed. Carol received numerous awards, including the 2024 Unsung Hero Award from the Lehigh Valley Office of Aging and Adult Services. She was also honored as the face of "Aging Well" by United Way of Lehigh Valley-a fitting tribute for someone who truly embodied vitality and purpose at every age. Carol's faith was the foundation of her life. She gave her life to Christ in 1983 at Canaan Baptist Church in Harlem and later became a cherished member of Resurrected Life under Reverend Dr. Gregory Edwards. Affectionately known as "Sister Carol," she was a pillar in the church's Women's and Drama Ministries and was lovingly embraced as a Church Mother, known for her wisdom, motherly guidance, and genuine love for all. To know Carol was to know honesty, passion, and an unmatched sense of humor. She spoke her mind with clarity and care. She also loved to bake, and her cakes and pies became a centerpiece of every Thanksgiving celebration, bringing joy and sweetness to family and friends alike. Carol leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and service. She is deeply missed by her sister, Darice Gonzalez; her nephew, Jason Dawson; and a host of godchildren, cousins, extended family, and lifelong friends who were blessed to be part of her vibrant journey. Services: 11 AM Saturday, June 7, 2025 at Resurrected Life Church, 620 W. Hamilton Street, Allentown. A viewing will be held from 9-11 AM Saturday in the church. Interment to follow at Highland Memorial Park, Allentown. www.BKRFH.com To plant Memorial Trees in memory of Carol Ann Gonzalez, please click here to visit our sympathy store.

I find it unbelievable that Carol is no longer physically here. She was a dear, dear friend. We had a little competition going on. She said, "I didn't know you could Latin like that. I said Girl I grew up in Spanish Harlem. I'm the rose you hear tell of. We laughed so hard
Carol, I wish you peace and that you already with Shona.

Carol and I shared a lot of laughter, many adventures in real time and many a "real talk" conversation. We both grew up in NYC and even though I am much older than she, our friendship grew in meaningful ways. I miss my young friend and I am so happy she transitioned peacefully. May Carol rest with peace and power with her daughter and the ancestors.
