Edwin Hein Obituary

Edwin "Ed" Hein Jr, a beloved father, dedicated engineer, passionate cyclist, and Marine Corps veteran, passed away suddenly on February 3, 2025, at the age of 60 while pursuing one of his greatest loves - cycling.
Born July 1, 1964, Ed was a man whose life was defined by service, passion, and an unwavering commitment to family and community. His journey began with his service in the United States Marine Corps, where he enlisted in 1982 and served as a Lance Corporal. This experience instilled in him a sense of discipline, dedication, and patriotism that would shape the rest of his life.
After completing his military service, Ed pursued higher education at Penn State University, graduating in 1988 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He built a successful career as an engineer, dedicating himself to his profession with the same intensity he brought to all aspects of his life.
Ed was perhaps most renowned in the community for his profound impact on the Philadelphia cycling community. A member of Guy's Racing Club, he was far more than a casual rider. He was a former board member of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and past president of Suburban Cyclists Unlimited. Ed was a mentor to countless new cyclists, embodying the spirit of community and shared passion.
As a father, Ed was extraordinary. To his daughters Anabel (8) and Lola (6), he was a superhero - creating a childhood filled with adventures, from bike rides and ice skating to swimming lessons and family vacations. His commitment to fatherhood was absolute, characterized by love, engagement, and a desire to provide rich, meaningful experiences.
Ed was equally dedicated to his extended family. He was a loving brother to Carl and Doug, supported by his sister-in-law Helene McGuire-Hein. His nieces - Christa, Brittney, Lara, and Carly - knew him as the quintessential uncle, attending every dance recital for over two decades and always ready with a new bike to spark their love for cycling.
At the time of his passing, Ed was on the cusp of retirement, looking forward to more time with his family, increased cycling, continued community involvement, and well-deserved relaxation. His final ride, tragically cut short, was a testament to his lifelong passion and commitment to living life to its fullest.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and community engagement that touched thousands of lives. Ed is survived by his wife Andreina Perez Hein, daughters Anabel and Lola, brothers Carl and Doug, Carl's wife Helene, Andreina's sister and husband Katherine and Orlando Rivera, five nieces, three nephews-in-law, and his young grand-nephew Jack.
Ed Hein lived a life of purpose, passion, and profound connection. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
Services: A viewing will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 8th, 2025, at Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home, 17th & Hamilton Streets, Allentown, PA, followed by a Service at 3 p.m., celebrating Ed's remarkable life. Those who knew him are invited to share memories, stories, and photographs that capture the essence of this extraordinary man.
Contributions: In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, an organization Ed passionately supported throughout his life.

Speechless. Ed lead me to a whole new level of cycling. And yes he was always at the front pulling; loved to be at the front.

Ed led the SCU , HH rides on Tuesdays during the Summer. That's where I met him and we became friends and rode together on weekend rides. A great person. An all around athlete. Super strong on the bike. On those HH rides, he'd be at the front for 50 miles. He loved cycling. A man's man, with a heart of gold. I will miss my cycling friend. I'm so sad. My condolences

I attended one of the bicycle safety classes Ed taught and was a better rider because of it. To ride with him on the road was to be inspired. My condolences to the family.
