Evan Sloan Obituary
Dr. Evan S. Sloan, a well-known veterinarian in the Stroudsburg area, died at his home the night of Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at the age of 71 leaving his beloved wife Cindy and their two children Evangelina and Nathaniel.
Evan was born on October 27, 1953, in Reading, Pennsylvania to the late Joseph H. Sloan and Gene L. Fisher. He was the third of four children: Dave, Nina and Howard, who survived him besides other family members and close friends.
Evan was an outstanding veterinarian in the greater Stroudsburg area. He was the former owner of Smithfield Animal Hospital in East Stroudsburg and of the Stroudsburg Animal Hospital in Stroudsburg. He had been active in the Stroudsburg Rotary Club and had served as club president.
Evan obtained an Agricultural Major from Ohio State University in 1975 as well as graduating from Microbiology and Acarology. He entered the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1981 after earning a degree in Master of Arts, and a Veterinary MB at the University of Cambridge Queens' College, UK. He served his residency at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and an internship at the North Shore Animal League in Port Washington, NY. In 2003, he obtained a diploma in Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases from the University of London. In 2012, he worked for the Wildlife Conservation Society at the New York Central Park Zoo.
Evan was an accomplished artist, photographer, poet, painter, musician, composer, guitar player, and songwriter. He recorded four albums of original music in collaboration with his producer, the late Michael Herron: No Access, Love's the Victim, Circle of Six and Tierra Mojada and painted over 150 paintings.
His love of travel and adventure took him all over the world. He visited more than 65 countries; rode his motorcycle and bicycle all over Europe; hitchhiked around the U.S; studied fish and walrus in Alaska; visited Asia, including horseback riding on an expedition in Mongolia; studied anthropological practices in the Indonesian Islands and Papua, New Guinea; went to Africa, including studies in thicks and bats in Egypt. He was an avid mountain climber in South and Central America. Evan was a licensed pilot, a scuba diving expert, yoga practitioner, was fluent in the Spanish language, and a French Culinary School apprentice in NYC.
Evan lived his life fully. His sense of humor, justice, commitment, love for nature and living beings improved the lives of many people. He left a huge mark in the world, and his absence will be deeply felt.
