James Akins Obituary

James S. Akins, 57 years young, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on March 20, 1968, he was the beloved son of James E. and Barbara A. (McFaull) Akins, of Kresgeville, PA. James was the loving husband of Donna (Leap) Akins of Effort, PA. They would have celebrated their 8th wedding anniversary on September 9. He worked as an electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #375 in Allentown, PA, where he was known for his dedication, skill, and strong work ethic. James was the kind of man whose presence could light up a room-warm, generous, and endlessly loving. He was a devoted husband, a cherished son and brother, and a deeply proud father and grandfather. His life was rooted in kindness, connection, and loyalty. His family was his world, and he loved them fiercely and unconditionally. To his beloved Donna, James was not only a partner but a best friend-a steady source of laughter, comfort, and joy. As a father and grandfather, he was a constant presence, offering big smiles, listening ears, and bear hugs that could make everything feel okay. As a son and brother, he brought deep pride, unwavering support, and love that never wavered. James found wonder in the world around him and joy in the everyday. A passionate traveler, he believed that the journey mattered just as much as the destination. He especially loved exploring places off the beaten path, finding peace in the quiet beauty of a back road or the charm of a hidden gem. Nothing brought him more joy than a cozy cabin in the woods, where he could relax, recharge, and soak in the simplicity of nature. He cheered with fierce devotion for his Philadelphia Flyers, Phillies, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was also a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan - he had to lay out his blanket and turn on his Eagles light before the game so he did not jinx his team. His love of soft rock was the soundtrack to countless treasured memories-road trips, backyard cookouts, or quiet nights around a fire. A true original, James had a boundless sense of humor and a playful curiosity. His fascination with Bigfoot was more than a fun hobby-it was a reflection of his belief in the extraordinary and his childlike wonder at life's mysteries. He had a special gift for making others feel seen, valued, and loved. James leaves behind a legacy of love-of time well spent, of stories shared, of laughter, music, and the unshakable bonds of family. Though his time with us ended far too soon, his spirit will live on in every memory, every note of a favorite song, and every moment of joy that reminds us of him. His love will continue to carry us forward. He will be missed more than words can express-and never, ever forgotten. James is survived by his wife, Donna (Leap) Akins of Effort, PA; his parents, James E. and Barbara Akins of Kresgeville, PA; his children: Caitlin L. La Rue and husband Lindy, of Tunkhannock, PA, James R. Akins of Kunkletown, PA, Ryan C. Akins of Exeter, PA; and his stepchildren: Joshua Leap of Effort, PA and Jason Leap and wife Sarah of Lebanon, PA. He was a loving grandfather to Sadie, Riley, Hailey, Levi, Gabriel, Logan, Stephanie, and a granddaughter on the way, due in September. James is also survived by his siblings: Andrew J. Akins and wife Laura of Eagleville, PA, Sean M. Akins and wife Renee of Red Hill, PA, and Cara Woudenberg and husband Robert of Collegeville, PA; his in-laws: Eric King of Tunkhannock, PA, Edward King of Stroudsburg, PA, Keith King and wife Tammy of Stroudsburg, PA, Susan King of Kunkletown, PA; his mother-in-law, Margaret King of Stroudsburg, PA; aunts Alice DenHaese of Albrightsville, PA, and Marian Witalec of Sarasota, FL; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at Gower Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 1426 Route 209, Gilbert, PA, with Rev. David Felker officiating. Family and friends are invited to offer condolences at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 5, from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Rest easy, James. You are deeply loved, sorely missed, and will forever live in our hearts. Please give yourself a big hug from all of us. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in loving memory of James Scott Akins may be made to Father Judge High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Yesterday

I am so sorry to hear about Jimmy. Losing a child is almost unbearable. I, cousin of Barb Akins, remember when Jim was just a little boy living on Frankford Avenue across the street from Nannette Manufacturing Company. He is now happily home with our loving Father God in Heaven and I am sure he is watching over all of his family .
