Jeffrey Degler Obituary

Jeffrey Lynn (Jeff) Degler, 81, of West Lawn, PA passed away Friday, February 28th, at Reading Hospital & Medical Center, West Reading. Jeff was born in Shillington, PA on April 3, 1943, a son of the late Lydia S (Steffy) and Earl R Degler. He was the husband of Cheryl Christine (Angstadt) Degler, who survives him. They were married for 57 years. A graduate of Wilson High School class of 1961. He served in the U.S. Army as a Specialist 5 (E5) in the Vietnam War era. Jeff enjoyed spending his days watching his beloved Phillies and Eagles play. He started his 60-year career in grocery store management at Ciottis Market at age 16, and rose to Manager of the Greenfields store. He owned the Briner's Food Markets in Wernersville and Reading; and was later store manager at Pathmark and Shur-Fine, ending his career with Weis Markets. In addition to his wife, Cheryl, Jeff is survived by a daughter, Tracy L Ravert., wife of James Ravert, of Spring Township; and a son, Jeffrey Lee, husband of Karen Degler, of Spring Township. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Brian Gillease, husband of Breanne, of Douglasville; Megan G. Ravert of College Park, MD; Kyle B. Degler of Spring Township; Sarah E. Ravert of Middlesboro, KY; Kira L. Degler of Spring Township and a great-grandson Quentin A. Gillease. Also his best buddy, a King Charles Cavalier named Reily, (Deceased). He was predeceased by a brother; Joel R. Degler who died in 1988. Services to be determined at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be in his name to Veteran's Making a Difference 2412 Spring St. West Lawn, PA 19609. Interment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery Sinking Spring, PA. "Lynn". I never knew that was his middle name. I grew up with his son Jeff and spent a lot of time at the Degler house and the many super markets he ran. The memories are what we have to look back and laugh. Thank you for the modified soda machine, magazine collection and the pool.

I was a friend of Jeff's from the 310th transportation unit. Jeff was a really great guy. There's not a lot of us left from that unit. He got out a few years before I did.

Jeffery, the final battle is now over and peace has been restored. You are now relieved from your post. A job well done fellow Vietnam Veteran. We all are grateful for your stepping up to the plate when your country needed you the most. America thanks you for your service to our country in the defense of freedom. The final volley has sounded and taps is about to sound ending a successful career as a nation“s defender. Farewell fellow war veteran.
