Jerome S. Stefanko

Jerome S. Stefanko, a cherished husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on January 23, 2025 at his home in Zionsville. Born on August 10, 1938, in Pittsburgh, PA, Jerome lived a life rich with purpose, creativity, and love.

A 1956 graduate of North Catholic High School, Jerome continued his education at the University of Dayton, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Physics in 1960. It was during his time in Washington, DC, that he met the love of his life, Mary Lou (Luartes) Stefanko, with whom he shared 63 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with laughter and adventure, starting in Bethel Park before eventually settling in Zionsville, where Jerome completed his distinguished career.

Jerome's professional journey began at Allis Chalmers, being one of the earlier nuclear physicists forging nuclear energy. From there he went to the former Westinghouse, where he contributed to the groundbreaking NERVA (Nuclear Energy Rocket Vehicle Application) at Large, PA. After 12 years in nearby Bethel Park, the family moved to Zionsville where he dedicated the last 20 years of his career to PP&L, serving as the Manager of Nuclear Fuels for the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station with unwavering commitment and expertise.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jerome was a true Renaissance man with a passion for the arts. He was a skilled artisan woodworker, crafting exquisite furniture and restoring pieces with meticulous care and attention to detail. His creativity didn't stop there; Jerome penned poetry and short stories, sharing them with family, friends, and the community. He also delighted in music, playing the guitar and showcasing his remarkable voice as the lead vocalist in a three-person combo during his younger years.

Above all, Jerome loved his family deeply. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Lou; his two sons, Jerome Stefanko, Jr. and John Stefanko and wife, Lori; his daughter, Karen Moffett and husband, Paul and his cherished grandchildren, Erin, Matthew, Ellen, Michael, and Annie.

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, January 31, 2025 at Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home, 222 Washington St., East Greenville, PA 18041 with a burial to follow in Most Blesses Sacrament Cemetery, Bally.
