John Moran Obituary

John R. Moran, 92, of Kulpsville, previously Harleysville, passed away on Wednesday, January 1st, 2025, at Peter Becker Community, after enduring a variety of health setbacks with his characteristic wit and resilience. Born August 28, 1932, in Pittston, Pennsylvania, John was the son of the late Walter Moran and Anna Chromey. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis "Elaine" Moran, and two brothers, Harold Moran and Gerard P. Moran. John is survived by his children, John R. Moran, Jr. (Maryellen Massaro), of State College, Pennsylvania, and Karen E. Moran, of Carlsbad, California. After graduating high school, John enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 with his high-school buddy Donnie Cary, earning his wings in 1953 and serving as a navigator and bombardier before leaving the Air Force in 1956 as a First Lieutenant. John worked for many years at Jostens, in Telford, Pennsylvania, beginning as an industrial engineer and working his way up to plant manager. After the Telford facility closed in 1983, John spent the remainder of his career at the Moyer Packing Company (MOPAC), retiring in 1995 as the company's personnel director. During his retirement, John and Elaine enjoyed camping and traveling in their RV, spending time with friends and family, and volunteering in various capacities at their church. An avid sports fan, John rarely missing a game by his beloved Eagles or Phillies, later adding the Penn State Nittany Lions as an adopted college football team. Had he lived a few months longer, John would have taken great pleasure in watching the culmination of the Eagles' and Nittany Lions' successful 2024 seasons. In his younger years, John was a consummate outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially deer hunting. From 1976 to 1983, John and Elaine maintained a home on Lake Naomi in the Pocono Mountains, where the family enjoyed a variety of recreational activities and John and his son spent many a fall Saturday hunting in the area around the "Big Tree." John was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Kulpsville, for over 50 years. John and Elaine made many close friends through their fellowship activities at Christ Lutheran and John's friends were a source of great comfort and support as his health declined in recent years. John will be remembered as a purveyor of both wit and wisdom, which he possessed in abundance, and as an enjoyable companion in almost any situation. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 26, at Christ Lutheran Church, 2211 Mainland Road, Harleysville, PA 19438. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's name may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 2211 Mainland Road, Harleysville, PA 19438.
