Joseph Grum Obituary

Joseph J. Grum Jr., 81, of Warminster, PA, passed away on December 26th, 2024. He was born to the late Joseph Sr. and Bertha (nee Dziewit) Grum in Philadelphia, PA. He is survived by his loving wife Marian (nee Welhan); his children Michael Grum, Christina Mecca (Robert), and Matthew Grum (Kristina); his grandchildren Ryan and Eric Mecca, Katherine, Caroline, and Rebecca Grum; and brother Michael Grum (Nuni).
At age 8, Joe was stricken with Polio. Doctors told his parents to prepare for the worst. His mother prayed every day despite this news. Her prayers were answered, Joe survived, and he went on to live an accomplished life.
Joe graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School in 1961, as the first four-year graduating class. He then attended Lasalle College and graduated with a BS in Accounting in 1965. He joined the Army in 1966 and was in active reserve for six years.
He married Marian in 1965. He spent 36 years of his professional career working at the University of Pennsylvania, primarily in the budget office.
Music was a significant influence in Joe's life. He learned to play the accordion at a young age and became a member of multiple wedding bands, the most notable being The Bill Jay 4, led by his close friend Jack Gebhardt. This relationship also led him to join the Greater Overbrook String Band. Later in his life, Joe taught himself to play the piano. He played with the music group at St. Cecilia's parish.
Joe was also an active member of Cub Pack 160 and Boy Scout Troop 160 in Burholme. Joe served as Treasurer and committee member for many years. Joe embraced the experience and built many lasting relationships. He was always willing to help with any tasks.
Joe loved his family very much and was always there to support them. He attended every sporting event and activity when available.
Until the end, Joe always thought of everyone else before himself.
Relatives and friends are invited to Joe's Viewing on Tuesday, December 31st, 2024, from 9:30 AM until the time of his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 856 Euclid Ave, Warrington, PA 18976. Interment will follow at St. John Neumann Cemetery.

I always enjoyed listening to Joe playing his accordion. Also the Phillies tickets his dad used to recieve working for PTC. Grew up a couple of houses down from the Grums in Nicetown.
