Patrick Sewards Obituary

Dr. Patrick M. Sewards February 7, 1953 - October 16, 2025

Patrick M. Sewards, MD, 72, of Allentown, passed away Thursday, October 16, 2025, in his home. Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late J. Milo and Althea P. (Kuhns) Sewards. Patrick was a 1971 graduate of William Allen H.S., where he cherished his years of playing basketball. He was a 1975 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, graduated from Temple University School of Medicine in 1980, and completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Temple University Hospital in 1985. Patrick practiced as a solo Orthopedic Surgeon, owning Iron Run Orthopedics in Allentown for many years, and was a dedicated physician who gave individualized care to so many devoted patients. He was unwavering in his dedication to his community and the city of Allentown. With a sharp intellect and an even sharper sense of humor, he brought insight and levity to every conversation. A lifelong learner and independent thinker, he remained curious and engaged throughout his life. He was a generous guide, a trusted mentor, and a loyal friend to many. Above all, he was a loving father and grandfather.

Patrick is survived by his wife Diane Sewards of Allentown, children, J. Milo Sewards and his wife Kristen of Dresher, PA, Patrick T. Sewards and his spouse Scott Follin of Huntingdon Valley, PA, Elizabeth A. Sewards and her husband Aaron Todrin of Allentown, Margaret L. Sewards of Philadelphia. Patrick is also survived by grandchildren, Payton and Dylan Sewards, Penn and Victor Sewards, and Andie, Ronan, and Louis Todrin. He is also survived by his brother Michael Sewards of Allentown, and ex-wife Nancy Ehlers of Ocoee, FL.

Services: There will be a visitation from 5 – 7 pm on Tuesday, October 21, 2025 and from 10 – 11 am Wednesday, October 22, 2025, all at Heintzelman-Stephens Funeral Home, P.C., 274 N. Krocks Rd., Allentown 18106. A Memorial Service will be at 11 am Wednesday at the funeral home.

During the past 16 years I have spent many hours at the Iron Run gym/clinic/social club. I am extremely thankful to Pat for providing all 3 of those services for me. With numerous surgeries, injuries and problems with shingles and my heart, he deserves credit for allowing me to continue playing sports at my age. Beyond being my doctor, I enjoyed our conversations about many diverse topics. We shared a sense of humor that brought us both a lot of laughs. A recent anecdote will explain our connection. I recounted to him my favorite quote from him. Because of my arthritis he had me take a low dosage of prednisone and at one point I asked him, "What are the long term side effects of taking prednisone?" He said, "Why are you asking? You don't have long term." I appreciate those words to live by. We only get so much time in this life, so do what you can do while you can still do it.

It took my days to be able to write this, the pain is real, the loss, immeasurable .
I first met Dr Sewards almost ten years ago for a frozen shoulde while he was working as an independent orthopedic doc at iron run on 19th street. I knew I hit the jackpot . He was by far the most charismatic doctor I had ever encountered , and I've seen plenty . Pat was as smart as he was funny , and instantly fell in love with his wit, charm, and most of all, those endless shenanigans. As I had continued to see him through the years for a variety of health conditions, I continued to refer both friends & family alike, all unanimously agreed, to know him was to love him.
When I was diagnosed with a rare neurological autoimmune disease, five years later- I had to trade my job for rehab, & docs office became my home away from home for both myself and now my husband.
Countless times I wanted to throw in the towel. Doc wouldn't let me. His daily pep talks and relentless motivation made all the difference and changed my life, showing me how to make a better, healthier version of myself
Doc was my inspiration and became my lifeline; along with the therapists who became friends and all the wonderful people we met there who felt like family .My husband and I looked forward to seeing Docs smiling face daily, hearing his infectious laugh and being enamored by his stories and always kept us laughing
One thing we can all be sure of , is heaven just got a whole lot funnier.
Fly with the angels dear friend.

Patrick was a great person and I'm glad I had the distinct pleasure of knowing him well. In 2008 I had a car crash that wasn't my fault and slightly tore my rotator cuffs. Iron Run Orthopedics was recommended to me. I was pleasingly surprised to see my cousin Dan Howard managing and several lifelong friends and athletes that I know working there as trainers. Awesome. I went there treated and reconditioning for over a year, with great results and good friendships. Seven years later I had a stroke and immediately went to Patrick to0 see if he could help...he couldn't...but it was good to see him in his new facility. I pray that you all have good memories of him. God bless you all.

My heart goes out to the entire family. I was deeply saddened to hear of Patrick´s passing. He was a childhood buddy I truly cherished-someone I shared stories and laughter with over the years. Our connection began with our fathers, who were high school friends through sports, Camp Olympic, and beyond. Patrick and I were fortunate to grow up surrounded by that legacy of friendship and community.

Patrick´s impact was profound, and I know his legacy will live on in all the lives he touched and helped along the way.

With heartfelt sympathy,
Peggy
