Paul McGonigle Obituary
A Life Well Lived
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Paul J McGonigle Sr on May 31, 2025. Born on August 17, 1946, to the late John and Elizabeth (Betty) McGonigle at Chestnut Hill Hospital, Philadelphia, Paul is remembered as a loving father, dedicated spouse, and cherished member of the community.
Early Life and Career
Paul grew up in Plymouth-Meeting/Norristown and was known for being a 'Bold Article' according to the sisters at St Helena's and his mother Betty. He later became an active member of the Carpenter's Union out of local 1595 and spent 30 years building a legacy of hard work, integrity, and excellence in finish carpentry. He spent 50 years as an Active Union Member and his Legacy lives on in his oldest & youngest sons Stephen and Matthew McGonigle who followed him into the union. Mathew is still a member with local 167. His sons Michael and Stephen continue their carpentry skills today with their own individual businesses.
Following his retirement from the Union, Paul and Julia decided to open Angelina's Italian Kitchen as a family business in which Paul Jr., Matthew, and Cristen worked with their parents to bring authentic Italian recipes to the community. To bring a more authentic feel to the business, Paul took up wine making with friends from South Philly. Wine making became his passion, sharing a bottle or two with his favorite customers.
Throughout his lifetime, Paul was an Outdoorsman, enjoying nature and had a love of animals. He also enjoyed coaching Judo, reading, and most importantly spending time with his grandchildren.
Family
Paul was deeply cherished and survived by his devoted wife, Julia, to whom he was married 50 years. Siblings Nancy Piperno and John McGonigle. His five children: Stephen, Michael, Paul Jr, Cristen, and Matthew, His seven grandchildren; Nicholas, Alycia, Sophia, Bailey, Angelina, Falon and Aviana. As well as 3 great grandchildren and extended relatives.
Paul's long journey with Alzheimer's Disease ended with nearly the last 4 years of being bedbound and needing full-time care primarily by his incredibly devoted wife, Julia. Julia is taking time to rest her body, mind and spirit over the next few months and therefore will not be having immediate service.
Paul is being cremated at Stitzel Funeral Homen and there will be a Celebration of Life service on August 16, 2025, with more details to be announced later.
