Paul Moatz Obituary

Paul Moatz Jr., 96, husband of the late Marian E. (Moser) Moatz, with whom he shared 70 years of marriage, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at Pottstown Hospital with his daughter and grandson by his side. Born in Gabelsville, PA, he was the son of the late Paul Moatz Sr. and Agnes (Moyer) Moatz. Paul proudly served in the United States Army and was stationed in Texas and Germany. His strong work ethic was seen in his early years working at the Boyertown Auto Body Works. He later became an insurance agent and manager with Washington National Insurance Company, retiring after nearly 30 years. Family was his greatest love. He cherished family dinner nights on Wednesdays, would be the first to arrive at family picnics, and would be among the loudest cheering and yelling at the Phillies and Eagles when watching games together. He was a gentle, but powerful presence at all family events and a tireless supporter of his family. Paul loved watching his grandsons play sports and rarely missed any of their home or away football, ice hockey, and baseball games. Paul was a talented baseball player himself. He pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies farm team in Dover, Delaware for 2 years before injuring his elbow. His teammates knew him as "Lefty". Paul also played and coached baseball with the Gabelsville and Boyertown programs. He was a volunteer at Bear Stadium for many years and loved watching his grandson Chase play baseball on the same field he took great pride in taking care of. Paul also loved hunting for decades at Camp Runabuck in Sullivan County. He liked to take his family there in the winter season to go tobogganing, snowmobiling, and ice skating, while also enjoying the beauty of the mountains. In his down time, Paul enjoyed golfing, and playing cards with his wife and friends. Surviving is his daughter Melanie Roth, wife of Eugene; brothers Kenneth Moatz, husband of Bernice; and Richard Moatz, longtime companion of Glenna Frey; grandchildren Jonathan Chad Roth and Jeffrey Chase Roth; great grandchildren Janalyn Roth, Karalyn Roth, and Jonathan Alexander Roth. He was also loved by many nieces and nephews and their children. He had a special place in his heart for his next-door neighbor Margie Moll. He is predeceased by his brother Donald Moatz, husband of the late Gloria; his sister Bernice Prutzman, wife of the late Leon; and his sister Janet Moyer, wife of the late Dee. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at 11:00AM at St. John's Lutheran Church (45 N Reading Ave, Boyertown, PA 19512) with Reverend Dr. Robert D. Machamer Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Limerick Garden of Memories. A viewing will also be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, from 9:30AM-11:00AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Paul's name to the Boyertown Area YMCA, where he swam and worked as a lifeguard after retiring, or to a community non-profit organization of your choice.
