Remedios Lorente Bergdal
Our beloved, beautiful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Remedios L. Bergdal passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on January 1st, 2025 at the age of 99, after struggling with six-years of age-related health issues. During this time, she was blessed to be able to remain in her own home with the constant help of her family and caregivers. The family is particularly grateful to Olga, Annemarie, and Patricia, among many others who cared for her with great dedication and kindness. During the last year, Remedios was also cared for by Compassionate Care Hospice of Stroudsburg who did an outstanding job. The family is most grateful for Nicole and Trish, her nurses, who showed her so much love and care during this difficult time.
Remedios was born on August 31, 1925 in Barcelona, Spain to the late Francisca Palomar and Mariano Lorente. She was the eldest of five children, two brothers, Leonardo and Mariano Lorente and two sisters, Paquita and Carmen Lorente. Remedios was the longest living relative and she was the last of her generation. She was predeceased by her four siblings as well as numerous much loved family members over the years.
While living in Spain, Remedios developed a passion for learning and teaching English. On Valentine's Day in 1958, while at a dance at the Hilton Hotel in Madrid, Spain, Remedios fell in love with her future husband, William Henry Bergdal from Rockaway, New Jersey who was stationed in Madrid while serving in the United States Airforce. They were married on October 15th 1958. Remedios had four daughters, Carmen, Elsie, Frances and Teresa while stationed in Madrid and California. In 1968, her husband retired from his military career and the family went back to the United States to live in Rockaway, New Jersey. Remedios was a dedicated stay at home wife and mother until 1973, at the age of 52, when Remedios decided to learn to drive and join the workforce. She went back to school and got several masters in Elementary and bilingual education and she was very proud of her eighteen-year career in the Paterson Public School System. She loved being a teacher and retired at the age of seventy-one.
After a few years, Remedios moved to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. There, she enjoyed a wonderful, independent life as a senior for almost two decades. She was involved in the Red Hat Ladies Social Club and the Music Makers for many years. Remedios enjoyed driving her car and she was a dedicated member the local YMCA. She loved participating in the Silver Sneakers exercise program and swimming in the pool. She also looked forward to events such as their yearly senior prom. Remedios also had a passion for ballroom dancing and she participated in many dance competitions over the years. Remedios was a very classy, strong woman with a zest for life and she was the epitome of a life-long learner participating in the Senior Citizen program at East Stroudsburg University for many years. Among her favorite classes were Italian, French, exercise classes and her memoirs writing class.
Remedios always felt that life was wonderful and she loved her family very much. She was positive and lived life to the fullest. She always remained close to her family in Spain and made sure to instill her culture and language to her daughters. The family will always cherish the memories of her in their hearts and they will always treasure this amazing Matriarch. Remedios leaves behind her three daughters, Carmen Axmann of Wildwood, New Jersey, Elsie Nawab and her husband Kazim Nawab of Binghamton, New York, and Teresa Bergdal of Bethlehem, PA, as well as seven grandchildren, three great grand-children and many other family members and dear friends.
