Shirley Stout Obituary

Shirley M. Stout, nee Purcell, a lover of nature and good humor was born on September 26, 1945, in Pueblo, Colorado, to William B. and Florence (Gerhardt) Purcell and passed away on June 27th, 2025. She spent the first nine years of life living on the Ute Reservation. After her father's death, Shirley was raised by her mother and stepfather, Earl Kramer, in Allentown. Shirley married William H Stout, Jr., in 1964, and they share six children, Letticia Mulford, (John), Kimberlee Achey, Sue Higgins (James) with whom she resided, Dianna Hummer, William Stout (Kimberly) and Anthony Stout (Sonya), all of whom survive her. Shirley is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her brothers Stanley, Morris, David and sisters Sandra and Barbara. In 2016, she began to make her home with her beloved daughter, Sue, who cared for Shirley during the last decade of her life. Shirley has been described as a force of nature and lover of the natural world. She was an enthusiastic traveler, a music lover, enjoyed cheering on the Denver Broncos, and spent many happy days engaged in crafts, crocheting, and bowling. In her final years, Shirley imparted her most important gifts to those who took the time to know her: Dignity in suffering, cheerfulness in the face of adversity, humor when confronted with pain, and the meaning of loving selflessly. She left us with far more than she ever took. Shirley's family wishes to acknowledge a debt of gratitude to her caretakers at LVHN's visiting hospice department. Our thanks especially includes Migdalia Figueroa, her faithful and tireless nurse's aide and without whom Shirley's care at home would have been impossible; her nurses Joann Mann and Kim Neubauer, two cheerful professionals who personify the highest qualities of patient care and advocacy; and to Shirley's physician, Dr. Sarah Nicklin, who combines the science and art of medicine in everything she does for her patients and their families. We thank you in a spirit of humble gratitude. The family asks that you hold Shirley and her love of natural beauty in your hearts and remember her when you look at the stars, visit the mountains, or listen to the wind rustling the leaves.
