David Milner Russell

David Milner Russell, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2025, at the age of 86, with his family by his side. He is leaving behind a legacy of service, love, and commitment to his family and fellow citizens. Born in Manchester, Connecticut, on July 16, 1938, David grew up in Glastonbury and then relocated back to Manchester, where he spent the rest of his life. David's journey through life was marked by his devotion to his family. He was a loving husband to his late wife, Ruth Russell, and close to his siblings, the late Alvah Russell Jr. and Dan Russell. As a father, he instilled values of kindness and integrity in his children, Ann Wetmore and her husband Don, Mary Bombardier and her husband Wade Reid, and David Russell and his wife Nancy. David's joy was multiplied by his grandchildren, Samantha and Victoria Bombardier, Chance and Evan Wetmore, and Anthony Russell, as well as his step-grandchildren, Melanie and Matt Wetmore, and Samantha and Jessica Reid. He was also a beloved uncle to his caring nephews and their families. David's educational journey began at Glastonbury High School, where he laid the foundation for a lifetime of learning and leadership. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Trinity College, which further equipped him for the numerous roles he would embody throughout his life. A proud veteran, David served as Staff Sergeant in the 117th USAG, where he demonstrated the courage and generosity that would become hallmarks of his character. His commitment to service continued for 45 years with Boy Scouts Troop 123, where he inspired young minds and shaped future leaders. David's dedication to his faith was evident through his 45 years of involvement with the Community Baptist Church of Manchester. His passion for helping others led him to a significant role in the Manchester Area Conference of Churches (MACC) and a position on the Board of Directors of the Manchester Interfaith Corp. David's spirit of volunteerism shone brightly at the Manchester Food Pantry, where he devoted 26 years to alleviating hunger in his community. His love for life was also reflected in his personal interests, which included enjoying rounds of golf, playing cards with friends and family, and cherishing family vacations. Those who knew David would describe him as a loving and generous man, whose courage was matched only by his compassion. He touched the lives of many and his influence will be felt for generations to come. David's memory will live on not only through his family but also through the countless lives he enriched with his selfless acts and warm heart. As we bid farewell to David Milner Russell, we celebrate a life that was truly well-lived. His presence will be deeply missed, but the example he set and the good he did will endure in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Manchester has lost one of its finest, but the seeds of goodness he planted will continue to blossom in the community he so dearly loved.
