Dorothy Sullivan Obituary

Mrs. Dorothy Margaret Sullivan, age 89, of Bristol CT, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23rd, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at her residence in Bristol, CT. She was born on June 25, 1936, in Hartford, CT; the daughter of the late Bernerd H. and Margaret L. Benson and was predeceased by her husband of 25 years - Lorenzo Sullivan. She was a long-time resident of New Britain, CT where she had many close friends, most who sadly passed before her.
Dorothy is survived by her 7 loving children and their spouses - Diane Blauvelt, Sheila Seymour, Brenda and Ceferino Sanchez, Raymond and Sara Blauvelt, Dale and Maryann Blauvelt, Jennifer and Brian Douyard, and Joseph and Barbara Sullivan.
Grandma also leaves behind her 16 adoring grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and her fur-baby - Kitty, who spent Mom's last days snuggled by her side.
She retired from Stop & Shop in 2005, where she worked for 25 years as the Service Department clerk; a fitting position for her outgoing personality and ability to get along with everyone.
Mom enjoyed listening to all kinds of music - blues, soul, jazz, and Motown were her favorites. There was always music in her home and continued to be even on her last days. Just last week, at age 89, she was asking Alexa to "play 30s and 40s jazz."
Since she was a child, she loved to read just about anything she could get her hands on. She always had a book with her. Over her lifetime, she surely read thousands of them.
She enjoyed playing bingo from the time we were children. Most recently, she enjoyed playing with the residents at Meridian Towers in Bristol, always joined by her children Brenda, Dale, and Maryann. Every Saturday night she played cards for just nickels, but she remained a fierce competitor. Fortunately, the winnings were not what drew her to the game. It was the chance to be with friends and family.
She loved to travel and was blessed to have visited many destinations such as Hawaii, Bermuda, Bahamas, Italy, Aruba, and Canada. When she was invited to go on a trip, if it was possible, she was up for it.
More than anything else, she loved to be with friends and family, and to have a good time. It did not matter if there were 50 of us, or just a few. She always made it a party, with good music and food, a few beers, some wine, and a shot of her favorite whiskey. Her sense of humor was
unmatched. She was queen of the one-liners, quick-witted, sometimes sarcastic, knew far too many silly songs, made the best funny faces, and allowed us all to poke fun at her.
She will be missed most for her unique personality, her ability to make everyone feel like they were her favorite, and her kindness to all who knew her.
We wish to extend our deepest gratitude to the workers at Beacon Hospice Care for the comfort and support you gave our mother in her final days. You are truly angels in disguise.
The family will receive friends at the Shaker-Hill Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT, on Tuesday, October 28th, from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. A Celebration of Life luncheon will follow at the Back Nine Tavern, 245 Hartford Road, New Britain, CT. Burial arrangements will be announced soon.
In lieu of flowers, and to honor her bond with her grandson Tyler Douyard, the family asks that donations be made to Autism Speaks, Donations Processing Center
Autism Speaks, P.O. Box 37148, Boone, IA 50037-0148.
