Edward McCann Obituary

Edward "Poppy" Francis McCann, 77, of Windsor, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, surrounded by his family at his home. Born in Rutland, VT on October 1, 1947, son of the late Edward George and Edith Doris (Daniels) McCann, he was raised in Rutland, VT for a few years before his parents moved to Enfield, CT where he spent most of his life. Edward attended Enfield Public Schools and was a graduate of Enfield High School, Class of 1966. After high school, Edward was drafted to serve in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged as a technical sergeant in 1969 and returned to Enfield. Edward worked for Kaman Aerospace in Bloomfield for several years before taking a position at Federal Express as a courier. He was one of the earliest employees at Federal Express and worked for over 26 years until his retirement in 2002 at the age of 55. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, boating, and returning to Vermont to visit his family and friends. Edward was a sports fanatic and especially loved watching UConn Women's Basketball and the New York Yankees. Recently, his granddaughter, Julie gave him a Paige Bueckers signed jersey that he cherished. As a young man, he spent many years playing in slow-pitch softball leagues in Enfield. Most of all, Edward loved being with his family and friends and would do anything to help them. He loved Christmas and enjoyed decorating every year including his classic red truck with the Christmas tree in the bed. He never missed his daughter's sporting events and activities while she was growing up and later, he was always present at all of his grandchildren's games, recitals, plays, and awards ceremonies. He leaves his daughter, Colleen Fontaine and her spouse Ross Weiner of Windsor; three grandchildren, Julie, Josh, and Emily; three brothers, Thomas McCann, Daniel McCann and his wife Sandy, and Robert McCann and his wife Pam; a sister-in-law, Beth McCann; a brother-in-law, Gerald Reed; his former spouse, Katherine Wakefield and her husband Peter, and their daughters, Alicia Rosalie and her husband Mike, and Jamie Field and her husband Mark; and their children, Gibson, Ellis, and Nash; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Nancy Reed; a brother, William "Billy" McCann; two nephews, Jerry and David Reed; and a sister-in-law, Diane McCann. His family will receive friends on Friday, June 6, 1:30-3 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m., in the chapel of the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Windsor Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Edward's family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), P.O.
