Edward Slowik Obituary

Edward Slowik, 91, beloved husband for 66 years of Barbara (Couture) Slowik, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 10, 2025, surrounded by his family. Edward was born in Hartford, one of four children of the late Peter and Stasia (Hejnar) Slowik, and graduated from East Hartford High School in 1951, and was Class President. After graduation, Ed proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. During his active service, he participated in a program called "Operation Tea Pot" in the proving grounds in Nevada where he witnessed explosions of atomic bomb tests and recording atmospheric contents of radiation in the clouds. Ed was employed with Combustion Engineering and retired after 37 years of service. His strong work ethic and drive inspired his family to be the best they could be every day. Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and dear friend. He will fondly be remembered as a kind and compassionate man who loved his family more than anything. He taught his children and grandchildren the value of faith, family, discipline, and respect. Receiving a college education was very important to him for his boys, and he instilled in them at a very young age to be serious in their school studies. His sons respected their father and will miss all the happy times they had going fishing with him in his boat, getting up early at the crack of dawn, looking forward to catching the "Big One". " They will also have great memories of playing golf and learning the game right along with him. Card games were a fun way to fill his retirement years, and they called him the "Card Shark." Ed enjoyed traveling to many countries with his adventurous wife, Barbara, and together they spent 22 years in Florida as snowbirds. He loved all sports, but his favorite was golf, and he played for many years both in Connecticut and Florida. Ed also had a close group of Cribbage card players who met once a week for at least 15 years. Other sports were also a part of his life, either watching live or on TV, and he especially loved the UConn Men and Women's basketball teams. In addition to the love of his life, Barbara, he leaves three sons, Mark Slowik and his fiancée Sarah Kasica, Ken Slowik and his wife Sandra, and Steven Slowik and his wife Debra; four grandchildren, Mitchell Slowik and his wife Jamie, Sarah Slowik, Savannah Slowik, and Eric Slowik; and at his special young age of 90 years, he met several great, great, great great nephews and nieces. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three sisters, Josephine Mirucki, Gail Sheltz, Sydney Hand. He lost many nephews and nieces at younger ages. His family will receive friends on Saturday, March 22, 9-10 a.m., directly at church, with a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m., at St. Damien of Molokai Parish, St. Joseph Church, 1747 Poquonock Ave., Windsor. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Donations in memory of Edward may be made to the American Cancer Society. See address and website below.
