Frances Mitchell-Ager Obituary
Frances Mae Mitchell-Ager, affectionately known as "Bootsie" passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, surrounded by family.
Born on April 23, 1949, to the late Pearl Bass and Homer Ferguson, Sr. in Hartford, Conn; she was predeceased by her brother Homer Ferguson Jr., sisters Clarice Arnold, Beverly Epps, Eleanor Green and Ophelia Moses. Frances graduated from Hartford Public High School, married; now deceased, Mr. Everett "Poonie" Mitchell Sr., and shortly after welcomed two beautiful baby boys into the world. She was also predeceased by her second husband, James Nitty Ager. Frances was a retiree of 37 years from the State of Connecticut Labor Dept. where she established endless relationships on the job and in the community; providing job training, enforcing workplace safety, managing unemployment benefits and reemployment services to the work force.
A second-generation member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, she grew up in the warmth of a loving extended family environment. Her childhood foundation played a profound role in shaping Frances's reputation as a mentor to many in their job search and daily living. Frances enjoyed serving in several capacities of the church such as the Choir, Usher Board and the Trustee Board; most recently Frances was the president of the Harrington Place Buildings on Barbour Street, Hartford.
Frances was a member of the International Free and Accepted Modern Masons, Inc. and Order of Eastern Star, Lady Evans Chapter #33. She was the Worthy Mason until her passing and a member for 40 plus years. Frances was also a Grand Associate Matron Electa Grand Chapter for 12 years. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her sisterhood.
Fashionista was one of Frances's signature gifts-the way she stepped out of her home each day dressed from head to toe. Frances was well known for her stylish headpieces that matched perfectly with every sophisticated garment. When she joined the Red Hatters organization, it was the ideal fit for her personality and elegance. I promise you, you wouldn't dare try to fill the shoes she so carefully chose for every outfit. Even in a sweatsuit, Frances carried herself with style-that was just who she was! And don't even think about touching her eyeglasses from Harvey and Lewis Opticians-she would let you know in no uncertain terms to keep your hands off.
Remembered by family, friends and former colleagues, Frances is survived by her sons, whom she cherished, Everett Mitchell Jr. and Thomas (Jennifer) Mitchell, seven Grandchildren: Terrezz, Jamal, Damari, Donnelle, Malik, Milan Mitchell and Kalah Thomas; bonus granddaughter, Nina; two great grandchildren, Jahlil and Denim Mitchell; Three godchildren: Anthony Arnold, Zaire and Cheyene Mathis; one sister-in-law, Mary Ruth Ferguson of Hartford, Conn, one brother -in-law, Charles Epps of Washington, D.C and a devoted niece Charron Arnold-Stoddart, a nephew Tyrus Pierce, a very special lifelong friend, Linda Stone of Winston-Salem, NC and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
