Kimberly Knowles Obituary
Kimberly Sue Knowles, 57, of Windsor Locks, passed away on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA as a result of injuries sustained in an accident. Born in New London, CT on March 18, 1968, daughter of Virginia Nancy (Sperry) Wilbur of Groton, CT and the late Burton Allan Wilbur, Jr., she was raised in Groton and was a graduate of Fitch High School, Class of 1986.
After high school, Kimberly attended classes at Manchester Memorial Hospital and was trained as a radiology technician. Shortly after receiving her certification, Kimberly took a position at Connecticut Children's Medical Center where she worked for many years.
While growing up, Kimberly played many sports and was a natural athlete. She excelled in softball and played for many years as a child and teenager in Groton. Throughout her life Kimberly continued to follow baseball and was an avid New York Yankees fan. While raising her son and daughter, she passed her passion for the game of baseball on to them taking them to New Britain Rock Cats and Norwich Navigator games throughout the Spring and Summer months. Kimberly also loved NASCAR and loved watching the races whenever she could. While raising her children in Windsor Locks, Kimberly enjoyed going to her son's soccer and football games and to her daughter's softball games. She enjoyed seeing them excel not only in sports but in school and later in life as they married and started families of their own.
In her spare time, Kimberly enjoyed tending to the flower gardens around her home, visiting and supporting her friends and relatives, and spending time with her grandchildren. She had a special bond with each of her family members and shared activities and interests with all of them. Kimberly and her sister Nancy attended concerts together throughout New England and especially liked listening to 70's and 80's bands from their childhood. She was a huge support to her many friends who leaned on her for guidance and a listening ear.
Throughout her life, Kimberly loved fashion, dressing up, and always looking her best. She was a "shopaholic" and was always sporting a new outfit, shoes, and accessories. After her grandchildren were born, she loved finding the perfect clothes and gifts for them which she lovingly picked out based on their unique interests and style.
Her lifelong love of animals, especially cats, led her to volunteer her time at several area shelters and to adopting several cats over the years.
In addition to her mother, Virginia Wilbur, she leaves two children and their spouses whom she loved dearly, Capt. Shane Alexander Knowles, USAF and his wife Capt. Margarita Knowles, USAF of Lompoc, CA and Stephanie Kathryn Sheffer and her husband Nathan of East Hartland; four grandchildren whom she cherished, Margaret, Henry, Thomas, and Lewis Sheffer all of East Hartland, CT; a sister, Nancy Stebbins of Westfield, MA; a niece, Ashley Wynegar and her husband Jesse of Westfield, MA; two nephews, Sgt. Joshua Stebbins, US Army and his wife Amber of Fort Hood, TX and Shaun Stebbins of Westfield, MA; and her cat Mia whom she loved.
Her family will receive friends on Saturday, October 18, 10-11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., at Bethany Lutheran Brethren Church, 116 Walnut Hill Rd., East Hartland, CT. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
