Marjorie Griswold Obituary

Marjorie Neelans Griswold (age 98) of Somers, beloved wife of 64 years of the late Howard W. Griswold, went to join her husband and daughter on September 26, 2025. She was born on November 8, 1926 in Enfield CT, the daughter of D. Everett and Marion H. Neelans. She graduated from Enfield High School in 1944 followed by study in New York City. Upon completion of her studies there she worked as assistant dietitian at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford. Following their marriage in 1950, Howard and Marjorie settled in Somers where they were both active members of Somers Congregational Church. Both were members of the Backus Society (50 year members). Marjorie was employed as the church secretary for 28 years as well as being Religious Education Assistant. She was very active in the Women's Fellowship serving a term as president and spending many happy hours involved in many projects. She also served as Church Clerk and Church Historian. Always dear to her heart was the Penelope Terry Abbey Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. She became a member of the Enfield Chapter in 1947 following years in the CAR (Children of the American Revolution). She served as Chapter Regent for 10 years as well as in many other Chapter offices and committees. She also served in the CT State DAR and was a member of the CT State DAR officers and Regents Club. She was a docent in the Oliver Ellsworth Homestead in Windsor and the Gov. Jonathan Trumbull House in Lebanon. In 2012 she was recognized for her 65 years of service to this hereditary organization by a proclamation from the Town of Somers. Marge was also a member of the Somers Antique Bottle Collectors' Club and the Somers Historical Society. She will also be remembered for her love of gardening. There are probably hundreds of her perennial flowers still growing in Somers and surrounding towns. Besides her husband Howard, she was predeceased by their daughter Sandra L. Griswold, her sister and brother-in-law Janice and Merrill Going, and niece and nephew Pamela Going Papanos and Wayne Going. She leaves several grand nieces and nephews. At the request of Marge, there is no funeral service. Burial will be at the Somers Congregational Church Memorial Garden immediately after church on October 19 th.
