R. Nelson Obituary

R. Craig Nelson, 62, of East Hampton, formerly of Wethersfield, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025, after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 11, 1963, Craig was the beloved son of the late Richard Craig Nelson Sr. and Gail Nelson. He grew up in Wethersfield, where he spent most of his life before moving to East Hampton in 2019. For over 30 years, Craig worked as a custodian in the Wethersfield School System, where his hard work and quiet dedication left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Craig was happiest when he was near the water. He loved the peace of ice fishing in the winter and the simple joy of living year-round on Lake Pocotopaug. The lake was more than just a view-it was his way of life. He loved the still mornings, the sparkle of the water on sunny days, and evenings spent watching the light fade over the shore. Being on the lake with his wife, Catherine (Cap), and their animals-dog Annabelle and cats Samantha and Cheddar-brought him endless happiness. Craig leaves behind his devoted wife of six years, Catherine (Cap) Egan, and his beloved animals. He is also survived by his sisters Sandra (and David) Onderdonk of Colchester and their children, and Lori Nelson Zak (and husband Piotr Zak) of East Hampton; his sister-in-law Linda Lannan of Woodbury and her children Morgan (and Peter) Kovach and Scott Lannan; and sister-in-law Vanessa Rourke of East Hampton and her daughter Ashley (and Travis) Wolf of Marlborough and their children Hunter and Greyson. He cherished his bond with neighbor and dear friend Taylor Barthell. Craig loved Taylor like a son, and their friendship-filled with laughter, stories, and countless hours together-was one of the great joys of his life. Taylor's girlfriend, Holly, was also part of that special circle of lake memories Craig held so dear. Craig was a member of the Wethersfield Game Club, a lover of the outdoors, and a man who appreciated the simple things- a calm day on the water with the love of his life. Craig also had a lifelong love for English Setters, a breed he proudly declared was "far superior" to all others, and he treasured the companionship and loyalty they brought into his life. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no public services, but a private family memorial will be held in the early fall. In lieu of flowers, Craig would ask you to pay it forward: buy someone a coffee at Dunkin', treat a favorite dog to a pup cup, or simply do something kind for someone else.
