Letha Benn Obituary

Letha Nell "Nellie" Benn, 93, of Carthage, IL, passed away early on Monday, April 7, 2025, at Hickory Grove Village in Carthage, IL. Nellie was born September 10, 1931, to William Asa and Eller (Williams) Gilbert in Darden, TN. On April 24, 1954, she was united in marriage to Raymond Benn of Manhattan, IL. He preceded her in death on September 4, 2017. Nellie worked at Asbury United Methodist Church in Kankakee, IL, as a custodian for 26 years. She and Ray moved to Carthage in 1991, where they resumed custodial duties at the First United Methodist Church in Carthage for another 13 years. Nellie retired for a second time at the age of 80. She was happiest when she was working. Nellie was a very talented seamstress and quilter. She was also an avid gardener. Nellie loved watching the birds and squirrels and taking care of and loving the many dogs they had over the years. Nellie is survived by her children; Peggy (Time) Lafeber of Bowen, IL, Thomas Benn of Huntsville, AL, and Robert (Lynn) Benn of Aurora, IL; as well as 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, and infant daughter, Martha Ann. Nellie made the decision several years ago to donate her body to the Anatomical Gift of Association of Illinois. There will be no funeral service. Printy Funeral Home will take care of her final wishes. To send flowers to the family, please visit our floral store.
