Mary Slight Allen Obituary
Mary Lois (Slight) Allen, born February 29, 1940, to Fred and Mary (Lackscheide) Slight, passed away on October 22, 2025, in Indianapolis, IN.
Mary Lois married Jerry Allen on March 7, 1958, in Pittsfield, IL. He preceded her in death on December 21, 2010.
Mary leaves behind three children: Tim (Jane) Allen of Eldred, IL; Cary (Joyce) Allen of Jacksonville, IL; and Geri (Neal) Hart of Indianapolis, IN. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren - Angie Allen, Scott Allen, Hilary Allen, Cory Allen, Andrew Allen, Krystal Weaver, Klayton Allen, Calvin Hart, Sonia Hart, Renzo Hart, and Nate Hart - and four great-grandchildren: Ryan Phillips, Evie Allen, Xander Weaver, and Quinton Weaver. She is also survived by two sisters, Pat White and Beulah McDonald, and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and husband; a son, Tom Allen; a brother, Harold Slight; three sisters, Dorothy Hornbeck, Joane Jurgens, and Betty Slight; as well as several other special family members.
Mary worked for many years at Trio Manufacturing (Nature House) in Griggsville until its closing. She then worked at Kepley House, where she enjoyed caring for the residents. After the Kepley House, Mary found a second home at Walmart, where she enjoyed working with many of her coworkers, who became like family. After retirement, Mary took care of her son Tom until his passing.
Mary and her beloved dog, Cinnamon, then moved to Indianapolis with her daughter, Geri Sue. Mary enjoyed spending time with her family and was known for hosting some of the biggest Labor Day weekend gatherings - the Allen Family Hog Roast - where friends and family from all over would come to eat, play horseshoes, swim, laugh, and enjoy each other's company.
She was involved in the Community Christmas Tree and served as an EMT. She cooked a mean chicken spaghetti, and her Deviled Egg recipe will be served at Allen family tables for years to come, thanks to her passing on the tradition to younger generations. Many games of cards were played at her kitchen table, accompanied by giggles and laughter in the front yard of her home.
Mary loved to joke about being younger than her children and grandchildren because of her unique leap-year birthday - she had only 21 actual birthdays!
Most of all, Mary loved her family. Walking through the doors of her home told anyone that. She had pictures of all her family hanging on her walls and was always happy to host a family dinner at her home.
