Nathan Toland Obituary

Nathan O'Hearn Toland, 77, of Monroe City, Missouri, passed away on May 28, 2025. Born on June 18, 1947, to Mary Toland Mefford, Nathan lived a life marked by courage, creativity, and compassion. A proud and decorated veteran, Nathan served with honor in the Vietnam War. His bravery in combat earned him several medals, including the Purple Heart. His service to his country instilled in him a deep sense of duty and honor that guided him throughout his life. That same spirit of service continued in civilian life, where he was a cherished and respected member of his community. Nathan was a gifted artist who captured the world's beauty through his creative lens. His passion extended to classic cars and his deep love for animals. He especially enjoyed attending exotic animal shows and delighted in taking his great-nieces and great-nephew along for the experience. His beloved dogs, Oscar and Mindy, were his faithful companions, and he cared for them with heartfelt devotion. Outgoing and kind, Nathan made friends wherever he went. He was a regular at the local nutrition center, where he looked forward to meals, laughter, and conversation with others in the community. Nathan was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Jean Bailey of Monroe City, and his brother, James Francis Toland of Monroe, Georgia. He is survived by a large and loving family, including many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and even great-great-nieces and nephews. Nathan will be fondly remembered as a warm-hearted and supportive presence at family gatherings and a man who always made time for those he loved. Nathan O'Hearn Toland will be remembered not only for his military service and artistic gifts but also for the joy, kindness, and light he brought into the lives of others. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the honor of knowing him. Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Saturday, June 7,2025 at the Garner Funeral Chapel, Monroe City, Missouri, Rev. Steve Barker will officiate. Burial will be held following at the St. Jude Cemetery, Monroe City, Missouri. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 pm Friday evening at the Garner Funeral Home, Monroe City. Memorials have been suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garner Funeral Home & Chapel, Monroe City, Missouri. Online condolences can be made at garnerfuneralchapel.com.
