Philip Weiss Obituary

Philip W. Weiss, 80, died peacefully March 1, 2025 at Wesley Village. He was predeceased by his wife Margene and sisters, Valerie and Charlotte. He is survived by his nephew Glen Fritz of Virginia; niece, Stephanie Walters, Houston, Texas; brother-in-law John Edwards, Clovis, California; and devoted caregiver Tina White. Phil graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and earned a Masters degree from the University of Kansas. But he was a lifelong learner and in retirement eagerly participated in LIFE classes (Learning Is ForEver) through WIU Continuing Education. Phil and Margene taught English at WIU and he retired as Advisor in the Communication Department. He was a serious film fan, taught film classes, and managed Cinema I and II for a number of years. International travel was important to Phil and Margene and they traveled widely. France, Egypt and especially Italy were favorite trips. He wanted his ashes spread on the Arno River in Florence, a city they loved. Phil coped with retinitus pigmentosa. a condition that gradually caused his blindness and hearing loss. But he maintained his enthusiasm for reading through Talking Books. As a former helper at Friends of the Library book sales, he read widely. He loved history, art, mysteries, and listened to almost a book a day. His remarkable memory of what he had "read" amazed his friends. He put the books away to hear NPRs Sunday Baroque program to satisfy his love of classical music. Phil was an intellectual with a big heart. He generously shared his advice, counsel, and financial support with those less fortunate. After Margenes death, Philip became a local philanthropist, donating generously to the YMCA, Macomb Art Center, WIUM, the Humane Society and Samaritan Well. Memorial donations should be made to any of those Macomb organizations. He wished to be cremated and Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A service honoring Phils life will be planned for later.
