Raymond "Ray" Alfred Scheiter Jr., age 89, of Quincy and formerly of Golden, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 16, 2026 at Adams Pointe Assisted Living. He was born on July 23, 1936 to Raymond "Red" Sr. and Laverta "Sis" Macomber Scheiter in
Quincy, IL. Ray's life can best be described by three words: Faith, Family, and Friends.
Ray was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Golden, Illinois and later a member of Trinity United Church of Christ.
He graduated from Quincy High School in 1954 where he was a qualifying participant in State Wrestling and was named most valuable wrestler his senior year. He worked at Indian Mounds Pool and was awarded the certificate of merit for saving a man's life. Although he excelled in wrestling, football was the sport that earned him a college scholarship to Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo. He lettered all four years as right tackle, both on offense and defense.
Ray was the first of his family to attend college and graduated with a degree in education, soon becoming a teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent at Central School District in Camp Point. During his tenure as superintendent, he initiated football as a Varsity sport, added kindergarten, and directed the construction of three new elementary buildings. He received an award of Recognition from ISBE's "Those Who Excel" Program. Ray would go on to become the Regional Superintendent of Education for Adams and Pike Counties.
His family was the most important thing to him and no one more important than his loving wife Rose, whom he wed on December 17, 1960. Ray and Rose spent over 60 years of their life together until Rose passed in 2018. He and Rose enjoyed traveling and spending time with their grandchildren. In 2001, Ray and Rose volunteered to travel to Ground Zero in New York to work with the National Organization of Victims Assistance. They assisted the families of the victims of the 911 terrorist attack.
If you asked Ray how he was doing, he never answered with "good" or "okay". He always said, "super fine and getting better". His positive attitude and incredible work ethic added to his amazing 89 years of life.
Ray leaves his three children: Robert (Cindy) Scheiter of Camp Point, IL, Angie (Mark) Bridges of Venice, FL, and Renee (Curtis) Higgins of Quincy. Ray was extremely proud of his six grandchildren: Molly Bridges, Alec Bridges, Megan (Ethan) Linnemeyer, Rylan (Ashley) Scheiter, Grant (Breanna) Higgins and Gavin Higgins. Ray was further blessed with five great-grandchildren: Isabella, Dax, Harper, Reis, Rowan, and Elliot.
In addition to his wife, Rose, Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Bobby Joe Scheiter; and his sister, Linda Miller.
