Ronald Mahoney Obituary

Ronald "Ron" D. Mahoney, 78, of Fort Madison, IA, passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2025 at his home. He was born on January 13, 1947 in Burlington, IA to Raymond & Wilma Lerche Mahoney. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971 and was stationed in Fort Riley, KS. He was selected for the Army Band and played Taps for many military services over the years. He married Kathleen K. Neu on April 5, 1968 at the First Christian Church in Fort Madison. He worked at Gleasons, Crandons and retired as an instrumentation technician at Cypress Climax with 40 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, playing pool and throwing horseshoes and washers. He played trumpet in the Fort Madison City Band, starting when he was 15 years old and also played in the Commander's Band and Herbie's Little German Band. His biggest joy was being a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. Ron is survived by: his wife: Kathy Mahoney of Fort Madison, IA; 1-son: Michael (Layla) Mahoney of North Barrington, IL; 1-daughter: Christine Mahoney of San Diego, CA; 4-grandchildren: Brandon Busby of Mexico City, Mexico, Hannah Winters of San Diego, CA, Oliver Green of North Barrington, IL & Evelyn Mahoney of North Barrington, IL; 1-aunt: Luella Lerche of Burlington, IA 1-brother: Roger Mahoney of Fort Madison, IA & 1-sister: Linda (Bruce) Forsberg of Alabama. Step siblings: Lowell Burgdorf, Pat Wooley Burgdorf and Pam Sciumbato Burgdorf. He was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory and no services are planned. Memorials have been established for P.A.W. Animal Shelter, 2031 48th Street, Fort Madison, IA 52627 or Boonie's Bar & Grill, 2698 241st St, Fort Madison, IA 52627 and may be sent directly to them.
