Roselyn Chown Obituary
Roselyn J. Chown, 90, of Macomb, Illinois passed away peacefully at 4:16 AM Sunday Jan. 26, 2025 at Carle Health Methodist Hospital in Peoria, IL. At her side comforting her were her son, oldest grandson and his fiance.
Roselyn J. Chown was born June 6, 1934 on a farm near Topeka, IL. She was the only child of Harold and Mary (Elliott) Himmel. She graduated from Deverman Grade School (a one room school) and Easton Community High School, graduating in 1952. She worked for the State Government of Illinois in Springfield during the summer of 1952, then enrolling at WIU, where she was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, and from which she graduated with a major in business and a minor in physical education. After her graduation in 1956 she married Arthur D. Chown of Havana, IL. She worked at Steak n Shake as a bookkeeper and then taught at Green Valley High School for three years while her husband finished his education at Bradley. In 1959 they moved to Bloomington where her husband was employed in a CPA's office. After a short time in Pekin, in 1965 they moved to Macomb where her husband was employed at WIU.
She is survived by two children, Lisa Thompson of Macomb, Jeff Chown of Alexandria, VA; two grandsons, Austin and Gabriel, one cousin and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Art Chown, and son, Tim Chown. Roselyn was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she served as a Deacon, served on several committees, and was a member of Disciples Women. She volunteered at the health department and was a tutor at Spoon River College. She enjoyed bowling, but most notably was an avid golfer who had seven holes in one. Roselyn was that rare calm, loving presence who was generous in every way. A talented pianist, seamstress, baker, athlete and gardener, she liked to always be doing something; unless she was watching the Cubs, Bulls or Bears. She lived independently at home until the end, having triumphed over several serious medical setbacks. She was a cancer survivor. Roselyn was completely without pretense. She didn't smile often, but when she did it lit up the room. The world is a little less bright and kind without her.
Services will be 11 AM Thursday May 1, 2025 at the First Christian Church, where visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Rev. Kellly Ingersoll will officiate. Memorial Contributions may be made to the First Christian Church, Chown-Himmel Special Education Scholarship, or the Mozelle-Davis Scholarship. Cremation has been accorded. Burial of ashes will be in Oakwood Cemetery at a later date. Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
