Arthur Greenbank Obituary

QUINCY -- Arthur J. Greenbank, M.D., 89, of Quincy, died Saturday, July 28, 2018, in Quincy.

Art was born in Blessing Hospital, Quincy, on March 22, 1929, a son of Arthur R. and Leona Jost Greenbank. He married Gwendolyn Lavin in 1953. She preceded him in death on Dec. 29, 2016.

Art graduated from Quincy Notre Dame, and, after attending Quincy College, he graduated from St. Louis University in 1949 with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. He received his doctor of medicine degree from St. Louis University Medical School in 1953. After four years of residency in internal medicine at Saint Louis City Hospital and two years in the Navy Medical Corps, Art then began his medical practice in Quincy in 1959. He retired from his large practice in 1987 and worked part time for seven years for the state of Illinois as a medical consultant.

Art was a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, certified in 1962. He was a member of the AMA and other medical organizations including membership in the AKK Fraternity and AOA Honor Medical Society, an honor he shares with his grandson, Dr. Daniel Hafez. He was a member of the Elks and Quincy Breakfast Optimist Club for many years.

Art was a pilot, having learned to fly from his good friend John Inghram in their 1955 Cessna 170. He made as many good landings as takeoffs during his many years of flying. He was a crack pistol shot having won second place in the Naval ninth district pistol tournament in 1956, which raised a few eyebrows given his position in the Navy. He loved to ride his five horses along the Quincy bluffs and on his farm in Siloam Springs. He was a member of the Illinois Ridge Riders and took pride that he was thrown from each of his horses. After his retirement, Art and Gwen spent many enjoyable years at home and on their farm as well as traveling the world.

Art and Gwen were the parents of four children, Arthur E. (Sally) Greenbank and Sharon M. (Walid) Hafez, both of Quincy, Dennis J. (Diana) Greenbank of Beaumont, Texas, and Kathryn E. (Laura Nortwen) Greenbank of St. Paul, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Amina Hafez, Mac Hafez, Adam Hafez, Arthur Greenbank, Zack Hafez, Dan Hafez, Caroline Greenbank (deceased) and Robert Greenbank; and nine great-grandchildren and counting.

Sorry to hear about Art. He was a true friend in the Optimist Club. I sat with him many times at breakfast. May the Lord be with you and Gwen in Heaven.
