Audrey Pauline Egerton, age 94, of Quincy, passed away on April 27, 2023, at 9:30 pm in Quincy Healthcare and Senior Living.
Audrey was born on November 2, 1928, a daughter of David Denton and Sarah Mae Byer Schultz, in Pike County, near New Canton, Illinois. She was united in marriage to Gerald Lee Egerton on December 24, 1947, in Hannibal, Missouri. He preceded her in death on May 18, 2000, after 53 years of marriage.
Audrey attended the public schools in New Canton, Illinois, and graduated from New Canton Community High School in 1946. She attended Gem City Business College in Quincy.
She was employed in the office at Moorman Manufacturing, and later was employed at the Illinois Veterans Home for 22 years. While at the Illinois Veterans Home, she was president of Local 1787 for 14 years from 1970-1984, and she sat on the Council 31 Executive Board from 1978-1988. In 1975, Audrey was involved in the first state contract negotiations and played a key role in building Council 31 into the union it is today. Upon her retirement, Audrey was active with AFSCME Retiree Chapter 31, serving as Quincy Sub-Chapter president for 27 years, including service as vice-president and then as an Executive Board Member of Chapter 31. She was a delegate of Western Trades and Labor Assembly AFL-CIO in Quincy. Among her many honors, she was an inductee into the AFSCME Retiree Chapter 31 Hall of Fame.
Audrey was later employed at Bergner's for five years. She volunteered for over 20 years through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Democrat Women and the Eagles. She was a member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church.
Audrey is survived by three daughters, Joyce (Dennis) Mayfield of Virden, IL, Joan Hester of Quincy, and Jolene (Pete) Wilcox of Garland, TX; six grandchildren, Chad Mayfield of Springfield, IL, Amanda (Joe) Kaburick of Carlinville, IL, Sonia Lee (Mike) Behrens of Quincy, Shane Hester of Jasper, IN, Adam (Jessica) Gibson of The Colony, TX, and Katie Gibson of Las Angeles, CA; seven great-grandchildren; four nieces and nephews, Gary McCartney of Barry, IL, Jerry Brammell of Canton, MO, Rhonda Ruffin of Lake St. Louis, MO, and Ruth Ann Giacomin of Hannibal, MO.
In addition to her husband, Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, a son, David Egerton, two sisters, Ruth (John) Brammell and Nadine (Francis) McCarntey.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Quincy Healthcare and Senior Living for the care and compassion they showed Audrey over the past month.

Service: 11:00 am on Friday, May 5, 2023 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with Rev. Rachel Stockle officiating.
Burial: Quincy Memorial Park, Quincy, Illinois
