Barbara L. (Hagerbaumer) Blickhan, age 89, of Mendon, died on Sunday, March 9, 2025, in Blessing Hospital. She was born on October 28, 1935, in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Paul and Louise (Slagheck) Hagerbaumer. Barbara married John Blickhan on August 8, 1953, in St. Peter Catholic Church. They celebrated their 71st anniversary in 2024. He preceded her in death on February 3, 2025.
She was a mother, and a hardworking farmwife. In her younger years she was a waitress at local restaurants, and she later became a Certified Nursing Assistant. Barb was employed at Sunset Home for 11 years, retiring in 2000.
She was a devout Catholic and active member of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Mendon. Barb was honored to receive the Our Lady of Good Counsel Women of Distinction Award in 2017, an award given to outstanding women in each parish in the Springfield Diocese. She prayed the rosary daily and during Lent said the Stations of the Cross. She kept a daily journal for years, recording all the things that were important to her. Barb was at-heart, a caregiver and shared her motherly love with many.
Barb was skilled as a pencil artist; she was also talented at crocheting and embroidering. She hand-made treasured baptismal garments for each of her grandchildren.
Barb adored animals, from caring for the farm animals, riding horses, to her favorite family dog, Lucy. She had a passion for doing puzzles, growing flowers, mowing grass on her John Deere mower, and she liked driving a tractor and cultivating the fields.
