Donald Woodruff Obituary
Donald Dean "Woody" Woodruff, 83, of Mendon, a beloved teacher, coach, farmer, and community leader, passed away peacefully with his wife Sue by his side at 2:20 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois. He was born April 11, 1942, in Quincy, the son of John and Eleanor (Dedert) Woodruff.A trip with Dean was rarely quick. At the Adams County Fair, at dinner, or even in the grocery store aisle, there was always someone eager to catch up; a friend from years past or a student who never forgot him. He greeted each encounter with a smile and warmth that made you feel like you were the most important person in the world.Dean had the rare ability to hold others accountable with firmness and integrity, while still earning their deep respect and admiration. Those he challenged the most often held him in the highest regard, a testament to his character and the way he inspired those around him.Woodruff's broadest impact came as a teacher and coach at Unity Middle and High School, where he taught PE and science and coached football and basketball. He was an assistant basketball coach for the 1972-73 and 1989-90 (30 and Oh Baby!) sectional championship teams before serving as head coach from 1993-98, compiling a 93-40 record. His .699 winning percentage remains the highest in program history, and he was inducted into the Unity High School Hall of Fame in 2014.He stomped many floors and shaped countless lives before retiring in 2002. He continued farming and served his community for 25 years through his work at Hunter and Triplett Funeral Home, faithfully serving families during their times of greatest need.Farming was in Dean's blood. At age 9 he began helping his father and uncles on the family farm. He was never happier than when he was on a tractor or bringing a baby calf into the world. Dean and Sue enjoyed their retired years together managing the family farm.Woody also gave generously to his community, serving 16 years as Mayor of Mendon. He championed projects such as the Mendon Veterans' Memorial, numerous park and community improvements and the arrival of Dollar General. He served as President of the Board of Education for CUSD#4, served as clerk on the Mendon Township Board for over 20 years and was an officer on both the Mendon Fire Department Board, and Mendon Cemetery Board.A lifelong member of Ursa Christian Church, Dean served as treasurer, elder, and in many other roles. His steadfast relationship with Christ was reflected in the grace and assurance he showed as he passed from this life into the next. For all his public service and accomplishments, Dean's greatest devotion was to his family. He married Susan Stewart Kerker on July 6, 1996 at Ursa Christian Church and together they shared nearly 30 years of adventures, enjoying camping, trips to Washington DC, Mt. Rushmore and Colorado. They were always locked arm in arm with their efforts to support and improve their community. As a father to Angie, Doug, Jill, and Ryan, and a stepfather to Clarissa and Zach, Dean balanced his firm guidance and tender care, shaping their lives with love. As a grandfather – great grandfather, he was playful; happiest when giving rides on tractors, four-wheelers, or golf carts, casting lines by the water, cheering at games, popping popcorn for all, or giving horseback rides on his back. His family was his heart, and he gave them countless memories to cherish.Dean is survived by: His wife Sue, his children Angie (Mike) Maurer, Jill Woodruff, Doug (Joyce) Woodruff, and his step children - Clarissa (Brian) Bangert, and Zach (Lori) KerkerGrandchildren: Kristyn (Jesse) Klingler, Brittany (Corey) Schweig, Josh (Emily) Maurer, Blake (Katyann) Lucey, Jack Lucey, Logan Woodruff, Bradyn Woodruff, Kasey Bangert, Kylee Bangert, Harper Kerker, and Dagny Kerker.
