Florine Metcalf Obituary

Florine Louise Metcalf, 88, of Sunset Haven, formerly of Plymouth, Zion, and 2103 Harrison, Quincy, died at 10:40 a.m. Sunday (March 8, 2009) in the home. Born July 5, 1920, in Seymour, Iowa, Louise was the daughter of Charles and Helen Stoffer Fey. She married John Walton "Walt" Metcalf on Nov. 26, 1938, in Marquette, Iowa. He died on June 12, 1977. Louise was a member of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ where she was active with the Salem Singles and Evening Guild, Quincy Dorothy Chapter D.A.R. and a 50-year member of the Plymouth (Ill.) Order of Eastern Star where she was past worthy matron. Louise did extensive work on her family geneology that she passed on to her family. A graduate of Plymouth (Ill.) High School, Louise was a bookkeeper for her husband's business, Walt's Electric in Plymouth. A change of employment for her husband took the family to Zion, where she took the opportunity to become an LPN in 1962. She was employed at Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan. She furthered her education at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, where she was on the dean's list. Louise became an RN in 1972 and continued working at Victory Memorial Hospital and later worked at American International Hospital in Zion until her retirement when she moved to Quincy to be closer to family. Survivors include three daughters, Karen Cookson and her husband, Rod, of Quincy, Sandra Bowles and her husband, Robert, of Palmyra, Mo., and Jacqueline Morgan and her husband, Kenneth, of Carson City, Nev.; a son, the Rev. John W. Metcalf and his wife, Karen, of Eaton Rapids, Mich.; 10 grandchildren, Kelly Cookson and his wife, Andrea, Kyle Cookson and his wife, Bobbette, Becky Locke and her husband, Terry, Tracy Dames and her husband, Ferdie, Linda Morse and her husband, Michael, Ken Morgan and his wife, Jan, Mark Morgan and his wife, Dawn, Kimberly Coy, Stacy Lauback and her husband, Ross, and Krista Kusnier and her husband, Jason; 21 great-grandchildren, Nathan Cookson, Shannon Leeds and her husband, A.J., Shaun Cookson, Shay Cookson, Jordan Locke, Madeline Locke, Christian Locke, Kylee Meyer and her husband, Brent, Alphonse Dames V and his wife, Katie, Halley Tuley and her husband, Tri, Isabelle Dames, Dr. Tiffany Miller, Mitchell Morse and his wife, Suzanne, Matthew Morse, Dan Morgan and his wife, Shandra, Christina Achoka and her husband, Moses, Courtney Metcalf, Gretchen Lauback, Harrison Coy, Trace Kusnier and Dannon Kusnier; five great-great-grandchildren, Emma Meyer and Lexi Brennecke, Emma Brennecke, Kylie Morgan and Palin Morgan; two brothers, Bernard "Butch" Fey of Abingdon, and Robert "Bob" Fey and his wife, Carol, of Mount Prospect; a sister, Eileen Adkins of Fort Myers, Fla., and many loving nieces and nephews. Mrs. Metcalf was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walt; a great-grandson, Wilfred John Dames; a brother, Richard "Burl" Fey; a sister, Marjorie Hull; two brothers-in-law, Roy Adkins and David Hull; and two sisters-in-law, Eileen Fey and Betty Fey. SERVICES: 11:15 a.m. Saturday graveside service will be in Rosemont Cemetery in Plymouth. VISITATION: 4-6 p.m. Friday in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the former Plymouth Methodist Church. MEMORIALS: The Haven at Sunset Home or Blessing Foundation for Hospice. ARRANGEMENTS: Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed online at www.whig.com.
