Gary Hastings Obituary

QUINCY -- Gary Lee Hastings, 62, of Jacksonville, Fla., died July 21, 2016, in Jacksonville.

Born June 23, 1954, Gary was a son of Ray Olen and Marguerite Iona Warning Hastings.

Gary served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, receiving the National Defense Service Medal.

Gary was a member of the International Boilermakers, and enjoyed playing his guitar, riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and going to Sturgis, S.D. He also collected different graphic T-shirts and enjoyed hunting for arrowheads. One of his arrowhead finds, found in Adams County, had a goose or duck effigy on it and was published in the January 1987 Central States Archaeological Journal.

Gary had been employed by Northeast Florida Shipyards Inc. in Jacksonville from 2011 to 2015. Before that, he had worked as a maintenance welder for various companies in Jacksonville.

Survivors include his son, Ray Hastings (Dusty Stanberry); his daughter, Raechel McCartney (John) of Quincy; seven grandchildren, O'Livejah, Corban, Giovanni, Allie, Alyssa, Milah and Malaya; three brothers, Jim Hastings (Carol) of Moline, Donald Hastings (Diane) of Quincy and Michael Hastings of Plainville; one sister, Patricia Briscoe VanCamp (Jack) of Quincy; a sister-in-law, Anna Hastings of Jacksonville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mr. Hastings was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ryan Hastings; one brother, Robert Hastings; and a brother-in-law, Roger Briscoe.

SERVICES: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Sunset Cemetery at the Illinois Veterans Home, with the Rev. Steve Disseler conducting. Military honors will be conducted by the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail and Quincy American Legion Post 37.

VISITATION: There is no visitation, but friends are invited to attend the graveside services.

MEMORIALS: Great River Honor Flight.

ARRANGEMENTS: Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home.

Sorry to read of Gary's passing. Great Jr. High memories of listening to Steppenwolf, laughing, & plans to conquer the world. Ah the naivete of youth. It is my hope Gary lived a rich & fulfilling life & is now in the company of Christ.
