Janis G. "Jan" Chaney

Janis G. "Jan" Chaney, 66, of Quincy, died at 2:40 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 16, 2013) in her home in Quincy.

The daughter of Jack H. and Janelle Jennings Hartmann was born Aug. 2, 1947, in Quincy. She was united in marriage to Jim Chaney on June 25, 1987, in South Padre Island, Texas.

Jan was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Quincy. She graduated from Canton High School in 1965, received an associate of arts degree in tailoring from Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., in 1967, and a bachelor of science in business and economics from Culver-Stockton College in 1969. She also went to airline training school in Kansas City, Mo., in 1968. She was the senior director for physician recruitment and retention for Quincy Medical Group.

She had volunteered as the director of the Miss Lewis County Pageant, was a United Way loaned executive, Adams County board president for the American Heart Association, board of directors for Quincy Hospitality House and the Nauvoo Stake Public Affairs, and public affairs director and Young Men's & Women's advisor for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a YWCA Women of Achievement honoree and received the Paul Harris Fellow award from Rotary International in 2010.

Jan liked playing bridge, movies, traveling, theatre and reading.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Chaney of Quincy; her daughter, Caitlin Erica Chaney; stepchildren, James Chaney Jr., Steven R. Chaney, Nancy Chaney-Smith and Penny I. Chaney; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, John Hartmann and wife Arlis, of Topeka, Kan.; niece, Angie Dorrell; nephew, Perry Hartmann; two great-nieces, Allyson and Katy Dorrell; and cousins, Tom Zenge of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Linda Zenge-Larson of Salisbury, Md.

She was preceded in death by her parents and uncle and aunt, J. Andy and Dorothy Zenge.

SERVICES: 2 p.m. Saturday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints with Bishop Nathan Seamen conducting. Burial will be in Forest Grove Cemetery, Canton, Mo.

Pallbearers will be Perry Jennings Hartmann, Tony Dorrell, Steven Chaney, Rich Gehrke, Dr. Dick Schlepphorst, Dr. Bob Weller and Tom Zenge.

VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and noon until time of services Saturday in the church.

MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or the Dr. Perry W. Jennings Pre-Medical Scholarship Fund at Culver-Stockton College.
