QUINCY -- Richard "Dirk" Bonebrake II, 39, of Quincy, died Monday, March 7, 2016, at his home suddenly and unexpectedly from a massive stroke.

He was born Oct. 30, 1976, in Quincy, a son of Richard S. and Roseann E. (Wheeler) Bonebrake.

Dirk worked at Titan Wheel in Quincy for more than five years as a machine operator. He attended Quincy Notre Dame High School and served in the U.S. Army National Guard for six years.

He was of the Catholic faith.

Dirk loved being a dad, and he was a loving and devoted father to his daughter, Nyah Rae. He was big-hearted, fun-loving and hysterically funny. Dirk liked mushroom hunting, looking for arrowheads and going hunting and fishing. He loved playing cribbage, and he usually won. He enjoyed dart league. Dirk loved being with family and spending time with his many friends. Dirk will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Survivors include his parents, Roseann (Dick) Gosnell and Richard (Rosanne) Bonebrake, both of Quincy; his daughter, Nyah Rae Hicks of Quincy: his sisters and brother, Lynn (Jim) Doellman, Beth (Mark) Tyrpin, Gail (Billy) Ham, Jill (Burt) Shackleton, Anne (Shawn) Myers, Kate (Dan) Nuessen and Zach Bonebrake, all of Quincy; two stepsisters, Elizabeth and Catherine Richards, both of Quincy; and nieces and nephews, Seth Calkins, Emily (Tyler) Wellman, Jessie Calkins, Jamie Doellman, Bryan, Elise, Nathan and Ian Tyrpin, Heather (Tyler) Duschinsky, Andrew Juette, Abby Ham, Sidney Shackleton, Allie (Jared) Summers, Paige, Collin, Simon, Sophie, Grace and Gavin Shackleton, Aubrey, Corbin and Olivia Myers and Alexis Bonebrake. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews and an innumerable amount of friends also survive.

Dirk was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Charlie and Rosie Wheeler, and paternal grandparents, Jack and Elsie Willer.

SERVICES: 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 12, at Duker and Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.

VISITATION: 3-7 p.m. Friday, March 11, at the funeral home.

MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made for Dirk's daughter to the Nyah Rae Hicks Education Fund.

My heart is shattered losing such a wonderful person who I loved like my own son . Although it deeply saddens me I can't help but smile at all the memories I have of him .

My son and Dirk grew as up as wonderful friends since kindergarten . As their friendship grew Dirk became part of our family . Where you seen one you knew the other was close by . It was giving him a ride to practice or games , staying all night or around our supper table . No matter where it was or what we were doing , as long as Dirk was there there was always a special energy in the room or no matter how bad of day you had and if Dirk appeared you were guaranteed you'd forgot about your day because he would have you laughing in no time at all . The guy always carried a smile on his face n carried an extra one to share no matter who you were.

To Bonebrake family , keep Dirks memories alive . They will get you through this tragedy . I thank all of you for sharing him with me and my family . He will truly be missed .

Thank you to everyone that came to the visitation, funeral or sent messages of love to my family! We were truly the lucky ones to have Dirk in our lives. I will miss my baby brother, but he gave me a lifetime of memories, and they are all good and filled with laughter! I love you, Lynn

I am so sorry to hear of Dirk's passing. I did not know him personally but I knew one sister Lynn and his Aunt Julie Regner very well.

I will never forget that smile. We had so much fun in the old neighborhood on Spring Street. Most all of my memories of playing backyard ball, ghosts in the graveyard, and being a mischievous boy have Dirk in them. Poor Dirk and Zack stuck with all them sisters. I was lucky to have run into them. I couldn't have found better buddies run around with growing up. I am so sorry you guys. My love and strength goes out to you. My mother always liked Dirk, he was the only one to ever call her Mrs. Snyder. She got a kick out of that.
